Both good points, this is a fun one to ponder for me even if it is highly unlikely.

I would imagine using the .44 rimfire used in the Henry would pretty much limit conversion choices to the 1860 Army or possibly the Dragoon. I would assume that if this was done at all it would have started in the Eastern side of the US to accommodate the ammo/brass supply issue.

That's about the only way it would work.  The idea a "custom gunsmith" could modify a gun to his own design begs the question: where is he or his customer going to come up with ammo, or even brass?

I have visions of myself, and other contemporaries, when in the Assisted Living home falling to the floor with our walkers whenever "Do The Freddie" is being played. And the sheer havoc of trying to get everyone back upright again.

I take the other side of this - I get a real buzz out of watching those old guys up there grinnin as they do their stuff - watched a "Ventures" concert last night  - Nokie Edwards as guest lead guitar (gone now I hear) - he's pretty laid back but that band was full of energy and they looked like it was still coming easy .

I've read the negative stuff about WD40 (here and other forums) for ages ----wonder whats that about ? By negative I mean blokes actually telling its bad for your guns not just that it dont work as well as other thinks. Builds up a layer of crud in the bore ? all sorts of fairy stories.  I been usin the stuff for years without any sign of a problem - mainly cuz there is always a can of it around someplace and I am lazy I guess.

Never seen ballistol up close but told it stinks pretty bad so not really interested in that.

Lucky we live in a gun friendly climate (weather wise - not politically!!!)- think Arizona / New Mexico - dry - hot - low humidity so keeping rust at bay is easy. All that said I reckon you are a mug if you trust your guns in storage for more than a couple or three months without attention - Too late afterwards!!!

This is the very front tooth , actually both upper incisors , the one I just broke and the one capped 53 years ago when I was surfing.
That cap has been discolored for years ... :-[.

I need them to eat corn on the cob & BBQ ribs ....  ;)

Broke one on right side about 18 years ago, eating popcorn. Dentist wanted to put a bridge in but I just had him pull the tooth. Since it was on the side, it wouldn't be seen unless somebody was jamming their fist down my throat. He warned me that the other teeth would shift as they migrated to fill empty space and my bite would be off.
Still hasn't happened yet, no problems. Saved the money it would have cost for what I considered as cosmetic work.

(Not to say I'm suggesting this as your course of action.)

Hello!

I was watching The Last Stand at Sabre River (great movie by the way) a few weeks ago which takes place in 1865. In one of the opening scenes a local family gunsmith explains to a cowpuncher how they modified his Colt to be a "custom made precision firearm" by "altering the hammer/cylinder installing a side ejector rod to punch out the empty shells."

My questions is this: would un-official cartridge conversions be available this early by various gunsmiths with the right know how or were such modifications not widespread until the Thuer style or later Richard-Mason conversions of 1868(ish) to 1871?

Follow up question: Are there any sources that show that cartridge conversions would have been done this early?

Being a movie I appreciated that they explained why most of the actors were using cartridge guns in 1865 even if I had to suspend disbelief due to historical accuracy.

I don't know if this is any help. But here is my '76 with an Axtell exact reproduction of the Winchester sporting rifle sight, and my '94 with an original Marble tang sight. Note that both have a slight forward lean - as they should. This is often lost on the cheaper repro sights.
