Fort Owen, Montana

<< < (2/2)

Virgil Lantey:
My description may have been a bit inaccurate in that I said it was Montanas first white settlement when I should have said Montanas first PERMANENT white settlement. I'm no historian but I wonder if that could be the distinction. Salish house, for instance, closed, dried up and disappeared entirely. I'm just guessing here and I'll ask an expert the first chance I get.
Still, an interesting place with a lot of history.

Buck Stinson:
I live about 7 miles north of Ft. Owen.  You can feel the history when you walk the ground around the barracks.   St. Mary's mission was built between 1841 and 1845.  John Owen built the fort/trading post around 1857.
