Anyone tried IMR 4831 in our 40-60's, if so how did it work .

the above 210-grain bullet. For instance, 28.0 grains of IMR-4198 powder produced 1,580 fps, 37 fps extreme spread and provided several 75-yard groups that were as good as can be expected from the traditional open sights found on the sample 1876 reproduction.
Maybe you’ve seen this article “Handloading the 40-60” by Brian Pearce..part of a series that goes thru the three “forties” calibers of the repro 1876’s

King ,i'v been reading on the said subject, (4831) and believe it is slower than IMR 3031 which i have had good results with. Also, i think it will be a full capacity load. You can PM me your me your load's if you don't want to post here. A friend wants to give me a pound (old stuff).

My load is basically a starting load, haven't had time to really work it more, keep buying new guns as a distraction. On the other hand, when the starting load is good, makes me question whether or not to keep working for better.

I must be dyslectic, I could have sworn it said IMR 4198. my bad. However, I have tried H4831SC.

King, now y'a talk'n, as you know when it comes to the 40-60 we are pretty much on our own as far as "old" smokeless loads. Looks like you found a very good load for the 4831, (good shoot'n).
Have a 1/2" of ice on everything here this morning, but in time i'll get to it, but not sure how much to start with. Will base starting load based on 45-60 & 45-75 loads, thank you for your help.

I dunno about 4831, but I can recommend 4350 as a midrange powder at about 60% of a full load as listed in manuals. I.have used it as a midrange smokeless load in .30-30 and in .45-70. (mv s come out similar to a full load of BP.)
I came upon the idea reading the Rifleman when it was a true technical guide to firearms use. A 60% load of 4350 in a .30 '06 or .308 was a favorite practise load under a heavy cast bullet at 200 yards on the NRA course.

My mentioning 4198 might have started a small brushfire for which I apologize. I was aware that you wanted 4831 info but there were so many interesting smokeless loads in the article that I mentioned it.
Dare I mention that I just joined the 40-60 club? That Uberti replica at Buffalo was just too tempting!! I spend way too much time poring over all the guns on the Merz website, but I think they demand the kind of stewardship that Dusty Texian offers so well.
Maybe one day when I start acting my age…..

Congrats for purchasing that rifle. I just could not convince 'someone' that I really needed that rifle. I just could not swing this time. I hope another one comes along with my name on it.
Can't wait to see pictures and a shooting report.

Thanks Black River!! Well I just gave in!! I can come up with no end of absolutely convincing reasons to commit this sort of foolishness! This one had to do with how much money I’d save not getting an original plus look how far out from the stand I can kill hogs!! BA says they’ll send it this week, which should give me time to figure out how to post pics!! Thanks again!!
