Simple tips on improving action on Pietta 1858 Rems?
« on: December 01, 2005, 02:16:57 PM »
Simple suggestions and easy to do with hand tools (and a dremel) would be appreciated.

Nothing too fancy is needed. Just improve the trigger feel a bit and reliablity. (I DON'T WANT CYLINDER OVER-SPIN LIKE THEM DARN COLTS!!!)

Alll I do to my Ubertis is lighten the mainspring. That lightens the trigger spring tension at the same time so you don't need to mess with them. I tried polishing the innards on one but the action didn't get any smoother so I haven't done that to any others. I would think a Pietta would be similar.

Use the screw at the (inside) base of the grip to adjust the mainspring tension/trigger pull.

I took the screw all the way out on mine and it was still too stiff so I worked the mainspring over. Maybe the Pietta is different. You can buy a lighter mainspring for them that isn't available for the Uberti.

Yeah, watch out backing that screw out too much!  I backed mine out on muh Pietta's ta where muh triggers was so light that I had ta tighten 'em back up so the fool thing wouldn't go off as I was sighting in muh target with jest barely any pressure on the trigger. :o  It was a real hair trigger and eyebrow raisin' experience fer me. :-[

The main things to do are to smooth off all of the rough spots and be sure that nothing is rubbing.  Everything should move freely.  The hammer spring needs to be lightened up by grinding it into and hour glass shape or you could buy a new and improved spring form www.vtigunparts.com .  I have not use the VTI springs but I hear good things about them.

There is no need for the drimmel.  A stone is all you will need.  Be carefull not to change the trigger and the trigger notch in the hammer.  These are the only crucial parts in the action.

Had my Pietta's lighten up by changing the mainspring, both now have about a 2 1/2 # pull,,,,pretty light, for some a hairtrigger.  Take it easy Pard.

Hey there D.W. I did my Piettas as Marshal Will Wingam said, just hourglass the mainspring by grinding gently and holding in your bare hands so as not to let it get too hot.
Just do a little and feel it then clean up all edges and machine/grinding marks etc.
Regards.Texas Tall. :) :)
