45-70 case to 45-60 case?
« on: May 17, 2022, 03:12:10 PM »
I did a search and could not find any information on how you guys turn down the 45-70 case rim to the size needed for the 1876 45-60 rifle. I can shorten the cases no problem, but I am having trouble figuring out how to turn the rims down. I don't have a lathe. How do you guys do it?

Never done it myself but I've read several times in this 76 forum where guy's will use a belt sander to thin down the rim. Must be careful not to take too much so as the primer to stick out too far.

Do yourself a favor and find a buddy with a lathe. With a collet set up you could trim a bunch in no time flat, and they would all be precisely the same.

kwilliams1876, I don't have a buddy with a lathe or I would do just that.

I don't want to take the metal off the head stamp side. I want to take it off the edge of the rim toward the case mouth side. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, its lathe work you need, anything less is crude work.

You might be able to make a mandrel with a snug fit in the case mouth and mount it in a drill press. You could use a file to trim the rim, measuring often. Maybe. I did something similar to reform .45-75 cases from .50-90 cases.

I wrestled that bear with my 1876 NWMP 45-60 Carbine. Some cut down brass would chamber, some would cam over and some not at all. My bud tore it down and with the toggles only installed on one side it chambered everything, on the other side it wouldn’t chamber. We messed with the toggles on the tight side until that side chambered everything too. Didn’t remove much metal at all. Runs fine now. I would check your toggle links one side at a time before cutting your brass. Good luck.

Kwillias1876, I didn't mean to sound snippy. I just don't have access to a lathe. I appreciate your suggestion.

Baltimore Ed, thanks for the information, but I have already trimmed the Jamison cases to the same diameter as the Winchester 45-70 cases. I just want to reduce the Winchester case rim thickness to the same thickness as the Jamison cases. But I will check the toggles.

I directly fit each case into a tabletop drill press, case mouth oriented up, of course. Power up & use a small needle file on the front of the rim. Light pressure is sufficient. I stop the machine & check thickness using a 45-60 shell holder. If it freely slides on, I'm done. If not, give it some more. I developed a good feel after a bit & was rather easy to hit it pretty close - I verified samples using a caliper. Has worked fine for me so far (a few hundred cases).

I use a lathe to turn some thickness from the rim, cutting on the inside so the primer pocket stays the correct depth.

I realize it's been 5 days or so since you posted, but if you've not solved your problem here's an idea.  How about making a mandrel from wood (or metal) that's a fairly snug fit inside the brass case.  Use a small hose clamp to tighten with part of clamp on brass, other part on mandrel so the case doesn't slip.  Next take a file with the edge ground smooth so it won't mark the case, and file the inside of rim with drill motor (hand or drillpress) spinning the mandrel.

Seems like that would work?

KenH, that is precisely what I did except I did not need to use a clamp and it worked great. I just snugged the drill chuck up to the brass case so as not to mar the case and it prevented it from slipping. I measured periodically to make sure I wasn't going too far. I used the same method to make the rims on the Jamison brass the same diameter of the Winchester 45-70 brass. Thanks guys for the advise and help.
