That was a good article. Anyone fond of the conversions of the old West should find this an interesting read. Thanks for the link.

Good article TL, enjoyed it. I'm glad there is still stuff like this in the Chronicle - rather than just the latest whiz-bang mods for Rugers.   I was a little concerned when I read this paragraph:
"Kirst Konverters are SASS legal, even
though they are five-shot cylinders. In
the case of the 1860 Konverter, you simply lower the hammer down so the firing
pin is between two chambers when not
being fired or in the holster"

That would not be SASS legal unless there is a safety notch between chambers.  I thought there was so I looked on Kirst site to be sure, and they do say there is a safety notch between chambers, so all is well.   :)

Even though I've only shot it in about 6 matches, I really like my Kirst-Strite '61.

I love my 1860 Kirsts.  While I am occasionally tempted to get a pair of Richards Type II conversions in .45, the engraved Kirsts just are so beautiful and sleek.

Twas' a good article, enjoy reading about conversions and Open Top's, not enough of them IMO. Selleck's movie Saber River is a great one and one of my fav's. Wish he would make some more of em of that era. Of my four non-top strap cartridge round Colts, my Richards II is my favorite, 44 Colt FF black, 200 grain Mav Dutch 'shock and awe'!!!!!

Where did you get your grips? Did you have to make them fit?

Some outfit on ebay.  Haven't been able to find them again.  They were a close fit, just some minor sanding.

It's sorta funny.  Even though I got my "Holy Grail" pair of Anderson 1860 Type Is, I still love my Kirsts.  After the article (when I still was using the Ubertis as main match pistols), I started a 5.5" 1860 Sheriff Model Kirst/Pietta so I would have a pair of 1860 .45 Kirsts Konversions to alternate with the Ubertis.  Now I will use the Kirst pair to alternate with the Andersons.

One day I will use the Andersons, my Fairweather Cristian belt, my Rossi coach gun, and 1860 Henry.  The next, I'll use my Kirst with my 1880ish leather cartridge belt, slim Jims, 1897 Winchester, and my Marlin 1894 Century Limited in 44-40.

TL, I can certainly relate to that.  Every weekend is a dilemma trying to decide which guns to shoot.  :)

Not a bad problem to have though.  ;D

A most excellent problem indeed!!  I find myself with a dilemma every match weekend Friday night.  Most fun indeed.

It dawned on me that I never posted a pic of my 5.5" Pietta/Kirst 1860.  Both it and my 8" Saber River Pietta/Kirst have the upgraded two hand pawl (like Colt SAA).  In both revolvers it was drop in and perfect timing.  The Saber river was 98% OK without it, but about once a match, it would not index far enough.  Now, both are rock solid, dead on timing!

And of course, the Saber River....

Those are a fine pair. I especially like that Saber River. Does either length barrel work better for you on the clock?
