Pick up wrong Krag
« on: June 28, 2022, 01:17:33 PM »
Was cleaning guns today and realized I came home with the wrong Krag. I pick up the wrong rifle after the final stage. I noticed the sights are not the correct year and the sling is much more worn. If anyone noticed that they ended up with the wrong rifle please let me know. I’ll be glad to pay for shipping both ways. Thank you!

Just went and checked, and happy to report mine is the right one!  To be honest, I'm sort of surprised we've never had that happen before.  (At least, I don't THINK it has..........)  Good luck!

As an aside, I think next year we should take a picture of all the Krags in attendance in one or two racks.  I bet there haven't been that many running Krags together since about 1917!

I agree a group picture would be cool, but. . . at the shoot at Western in 2003, they had a shoot-off between Krags and 1903 Springfields (since in the early days target shooters swore the Krag was more accurate).  There were at least 45 Krag shooters, plus the 1903/1905/1906/1903MkI/1903A1, a couple of 1903A3s, and even a National Match.  All told, almost 100 of Springfield's finest designs, all shooting ball-equivalent loads.

As I recall, there were 3 events that went into the aggregate: "Mad Minute" (as many shots as you could fire, 200 yards, on a single IPSC silhuette), 100/200/300 precision (10 shots each, on a bullseye target), and 600 yard precision (10 rounds, bullseye target).  I've probably got the results somewhere, but Krags didn't make the top 10 (maybe even top 15).  I shot it 3 times (Krag, 1903A3, and a K98k for comparison), and scored 3rd with the 1903A3, around 20th with the Krag, and my Mauser score was ~5th place.  Great way to spend an afternoon!

Note for the expansion-era shooters: the '03s had several problems with bolt part breakage, particularly in the Mad Minute.  Might want to make sure you have spare parts, especially the collar and firing pin tip.   I don't recall the Krags having any parts issues.

The missing Krag has been located. The culprit shall go unnamed. Lol

As I said before, I'm surprised this hasn't come up before.  After all, they all DO look alike!

The shoots down at Western were a blast (expensive, but loads of fun)!  There was always at least one match that looked at a past shooting question, and when you put 50-100 serious shooters on it, you can get a better idea of how things may have gone.  Krags v. 1903s was one.  Another time we did the Hickok-Tutt shooting.  No one was able to pull off Hickok's shot using a Colt's Navy, but several shooters made the shot with an 1860 Army.

It was a blast to meet so many fellow Krag enthusiasts!!  I was thinking of starting a support group for krag owners... how many did we have in all?

Rack numbers maybe?

.....that might not be a terrible idea.  I might just take a paint pen and put my GAF# on mine. A couple years back, a buddy of mine that does a lot of events at Ft Osage. Had his customized 1795 musket stolen. Whoever took it was kind enough to leave a reenactor special in its place.
