feelin' kinda low
« on: July 21, 2021, 04:47:08 PM »
I've done rendezvous and Lewis and Clark re-enactments for many years. I just got word that a fellow member of my Lewis and Clark group passed away after a short and sudden decline. he was six months younger than I and I'm feelin' a bit low. So ... anybody got any good jokes or funny stories? I could use some cheering up

I’ve been there too often lately, so I feel that if the friend wasn’t as close as they were and as meaningful in my life, their passing wouldn’t hurt as bad.  They were special because they made an impression on us.

It’s not a joke, but you have to remember it has been said so often:

NO ONE GETS OUT OF HERE ALIVE!

May he be happy where he is now.

Now for the joke.

Granddad telling his grandkids of his exploits in the old west:

There I was surrounded be a thousand Indians all charging at me, and I'm only armed with a knife and a single shot pistol.

Gee Grandpa what happen then?

They killed me

I can totally relate, Dan. Hope this helps.

Don't Shoot the Piano Player

A young man in the Old West wanted to be the best gunfighter alive. He practiced every day, but knew he was still missing something that would make him the best.
One night, as he was sitting in a saloon, he spotted an old man who had the reputation of being the greatest gunfighter in his day.
So the young fella went over to the old man and told him his dream. The old man looked him up and down and said, "I have a suggestion that is sure to help."
"Tell me, tell me," said the young man.
"Tie the bottom of your holster lower onto your leg."
"Will that make me a better gunfighter?"
"Definitely," said the old man.
The young gunman did what he was told, then in a flash he drew his gun and shot the bow tie off the piano player.
"Wow that really helped. Do you have any more suggestions?"
"Yeah, if you cut a notch in the top of your holster where the hammer hits, the gun will come out smoother."
"Will that make me a better gunfighter?"
"It sure will," said the old man.
The young guy did what he was told, drew his gun in a blur and shot the cuff-link off the piano player.
"This is really helping me. Is there anything else you can share with me?
"One more thing," said the old man, "Get that can of axle grease over there in the corner and rub it all over your gun."
The young man didn't hesitate but started putting the grease on the barrel of the gun.
"No, the whole gun, handle and everything," said the old man.
"Will it make me a better gunfighter?"
"No," said the old man, "but when Wyatt Earp gets done playing that piano he's going to shove that gun up your ass, and it won't hurt nearly as much."

Thanks everybody. Went to the funeral, yesterday and I was OK until an honor guard walked up an saluted the flag-draped coffin while "Taps" played. That was kind of hard. But, he had a good send off, many stories were told and it's all good, now.

Best send off I ever saw was for my friend Stu Kettle. Steve was a couple of weeks younger than I but died of colon cancer in Jan 2015. At the 2015 Grand Muster his ashes were shot out of 7 muzzle loading mortar's. It was great! There was just this big cloud of Steve and black powder smoke. His daughter went into labor on the way home from there and his grandchild was born the next morning.

The send off I remember the most was a musician, a drummer who sang also. His body was filled with cancer and he was no more than 30 yrs old. Very sad. His wife also sang in the band he was in. While he was still well enough to sing he made a recording of him singing "This song's for you, by Elton John. His wife played it at the funeral. Not one dry eye in the place! :'(

I don't do funerals well ,  and in particular viewings ,  I prefer to remember them as in life as they were .

Celebrations of life or memorials I can handle ....still  :-\

I could use some cheering up

*Liked* your comment because you brought up a topic that needs to be discussed and revisited when necessary.

If men are being candid, we've all lost loved ones along the way and some of their ends have been more painful than others.

Hell, if you do any reading on grief even the loss of a dog rates up there pretty high.

George Patton's take on these situations has merit and probably why one sees more Celebrations of Life now-a-days in lieu of Wakes.

'It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived.'
