No more trailboss?
« on: December 09, 2015, 04:27:32 PM »
I have just recently gotten back into CAS. Back when I started IMR Trailboss just came out and was the best thing since sliced bread. Now that I am looking to get into reloading for 45lc again I cannot seem to find it anywhere. Every website I find has it listed in 9oz or 5lb jugs but is out of stock. Not a single store around me has it either. Is this something that Hogdon did when they acquired IMR?

Nope.  It's still available.  Just not in sufficient quantities to meet demand.  Keep your eyes peeled and be persistent and you'll be rewarded with some TB.

The bottle neck seems to be getting it from Australia, where it's manufactured, to our shores.

It's around.  Good hunting!

Like many other powders (primers, etc) it was in very short supply for the last couple years, but I've seen reports of it returning to shelves just recently.

Not sure where your at but we started getting Trail Boss here in CA about a month ago. I just bought 10 bottles from a local gun shop two weeks ago and hope to pick up a bunch more at next weeks gun show.

Powder supply doesn't seem to make it all he way out here in the Midwest ::)

Last season was frustrating to watch shooters having a record number of squibs. Why? They're stretching their dwindling can or two of powder to be able to attend a match. Some dropping there charge weights below minimum & others using borderline/inappropriate powders for target or for pistol use at all ....as this is all they can find.

Very noticeable price gouging here, too. $40 (& up) for primers & $30+ for most powders (when you can find a can).
Thats over 100% markup  >:(

Hopefully everyone can find 2-3 cans of powder to keep shooting safely next year.

I got two 9 oz. cans of Trail Boss yesterday at a LGS.

I had my name on a waiting list and when the guy got some in he called and asked if I wanted it.

The price had went up to $19.50 from $16.50 on my last cans from the same store.

It has been relabeled and is Hodgdon Trail Boss now, not IMR.

I asked him to keep me on his Trail Boss list.

I always thought buying Trail Boss was getting gouged as it is. I mean at $19 per 9 oz. bottle, that's almost $34 per pound.

But...to each, his or her own.

I always thought the same.  Though the way all powders are going up, that price ain't terrible considering.  I have just a couple of loads I like with Trail Boss, including a 32-20 load.  One bottle lasts me a loooong time.

seeing how I cant find any locally and not going to spend all day waiting for something to come back in stock online I am going to go with a different powder.

My concern is that light loads using other powder in a big empty .45LC case will give me poor ignition.

Not likely if you follow the makers suggestions on minimum loads, go below what the recommend and you stand a good chance of it.

Agree! lots of other powders will work. including, but not limited to: Unique, Clays, Titegroup, 231, and 700X.
Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook is a good source for a lot of loads, all in one handy reference.

I've observed poor ignition issues in a lot of calibers..., pop-clang, pop-clang, bang-clang, pfft-ding, pft-what?
This is from shooters cutting waay below the listed starting loads and often combines with inconsistent powder metering issues  - depending of course on the type of powder. Example, 700X (one of my favs), is big-fluffy-flaky powder & is prone to metering issues. I've installed a powder baffle and extensively tested the lowest charges which can be consistently be dispensed with my setup. I don't charge any cartridge below the limit I've established for myself with this powder.

Have a thought for NZ shooters, two powder ships a year, limited quantity arrive, back orders filled, doller increase, same with primers. Add to this no brass available for some calibres.
We do have a guy making Black Powder here, we get one shipment of BP when that runs out the next is ordered.
i buy 6000 primers, a case of powder at a time. Primers retail at $7+ a hundred powder $65-$79 a tub.
I sold my archery gear, i think that was a mistake ???

I stopped in 10 different shops. Three had 1lbs in stock, two of them had them for $28+ and one was a more normal $23. The one for $23 also had a 5lb jug he let go for $150. LUCKY to get it! seems to be lots and lots of different powders in certain stores but prices are crazy. The others must be selling out or undiscovered honey holes.

that is exactly how I figured it, He had a second jug but thought I dont know how long it will take me to get rid of 5lbs of trailboss. That comes out to about 5,600rds!

I also snagged me a keg of titegroup, should make about 15,000 9mm rounds.
