Got a bit of an awakening awhile ago, and maybe even learned something.

I took my snub nosed .38 special out for a bit of exercise. It is my go to for concealed carry, so it gets carried a lot, but fired very little. ANYHOW, that little thing kicked like a mule shooting jacketed hollow points and accuracy was way out in left field somewhere. I don't remember for sure what powder I used in those, but probably TiteGroup.

I finished up with round nose cast bullets over trailboss. Much less recoil and accuracy improved a BUNCH.

Your assessment sounds right that it is probably a broken handspring.

As to caliber, 45 ACP and 45 Colt are both .452. I don't know about the bore on a Pietta but Ubertis I've seen work better with .454 soft lead bullets.

A 45 Colt cylinder will give you more options. Some will allow 45 Schofield rounds, as well. If you want even shorter cartridges, the Cowboy 45 Specials, which are the same length as 45 ACP, will work in 45 Colt chambers and I've heard at least one shooter say he uses .455 Webley in them. You can also shorten the 45 Colt cases to the length of 45 Schofield and still have historically correct rounds because in 1878 the US Government changed the official specifications for 45 Colt to the same length (1.1" instead of 1.285") so they would work in Schofields, too (the head stamping still read 45 Colt).

45 ACP chambering will only allow 45 ACP rounds.

I'll bet my recent PT and yours are not the same, a couple times I sat in a shower chair and showed them I could get dressed and undressed or rather I guess that was OT aka Occupational Therapy, first time I told them I didn't want a job. ::)

Located one ASM 1860 grip on ebay.  Need to find one more to replace the Bubba'ed grips.  Checked, and Uberti 1860 grips are really close, so I may just pick up a used 1860 Uberti grip and fit it until I find another ASM grip.

Got this several years ago never used, was thinking about a conversion cylinder, taking the cylinder out and putting back problem with getting it back in hard to line up. When I got the cylinder back in, in 1/2 cock the cylinder just spins, this not right. 

I think it is a hand spring problem, am I correct, or is it the hand?

Another question, what caliber would be recommended?  Looking at 45LC or 45ACP, I think 44-40 the barrel is too big.

I obtained around 100 plus lbs of lead sheathing some years back and used it for round ball muzzle loader and percussion cap revolvers. Good stuff, about as soft and pure lead ya can get, unless the modern stuff has been contaminated with other things as wheel weights have been. Ifin ya can scratch it with yer thumbnail, it'll work.

Sorry Abilene.  I failed to specify and define "goodly" in my commentary.  "Goodly" in my lexicon means a "sufficient" amount of lube.  If you get a little splash of lube around your muzzle, it's sufficient.  Mark Whythe's 125Gr carries a sufficient amount of lube.  Smokeless bullets with the lube replaced may be marginal.

On the other hand, "Big Lubes" carry a "Boat Load" of lube.  Another analysis might be described as "A Gob" of lube.  Both definitions descriptive of sufficient lube for "Anything."

My personal choice, for using Real Black Powder is for "Over Kill" in the lube department.  For more mundane applications, I shoot APP which allows me to do away with messy and bothersome lubes altogether.  I find that really helpful since I'm lazy.  It's also much easier to order Big Lubes from Mark and get em already lubed.  Lazy again and very convenient.  Burma Shave
