Title: Favorite TV police show
Post by: Wiley Desperado on June 24, 2004, 09:06:26 PM
1984-5-6 right in there somewhere, every week night 11:30 pm had to watch Barney Miller.  Loved that squad room setting, our squad room had characters that would have fit right in.  Hill Street Blues, was great... should have been able to log in-service training points for watching that one. What were (are) your favorites???

Dragnet and Adam 12. After that I watch Law and Order. I love how the ADA's go out and investigate the case. Anyone know of an ADA that would do that???
Around here they just call the detective in and have him do it!!

PS Sometimes ya have to remember that DA's are Attorneys too :-X

I've had some of them DAs like that myself.  I always enjoyed going to an intake atty to present a dope case and have to explain the charge and penalty group to him. :D >:( :o ::) :-\

well I guess if ya get right down to it; "Gunsmoke" would qualify as a TV Police show. ;D

Oh, almost forgot probably THE BEST TV Police show would have to be "Andy Griffith".

Gunsmoke is definitely a classic.   I got to meet Buck Taylor several years ago at the Fat Stock Show in Ft. Worth.  He is a fine artist as well as being a fine actor.    The Andy Griffith show took law enforcement to a "new" level.  Barney gave new meaning to the term "Crime Fighter"! :) ;) :D ;D :o 8) ??? ::) :-\

I do believe my favorite was "Police Story"!  Being a So. Cal. LEO, that show had a lot of the inside humor, methodology, and comraderee we had.  "Barney Miller" was good for a chuckle too!  The Characters were a hoot!

Hill St Blues. I never missed an episode. Mostly to watch Capt Furillos public defender babe. Hubba!

Dragnet and Adam 12 also high on the list.

Lets not forget (all you OLD guys) Highway Patrol with Broderick (10-4) Crawofrd.

Miami Vice was ridiculous but very entertaining. I also made some cash off them working off duty.

Most effective cop ever? Sheriff Andy Taylor?

Funniest cop ever? Fish on Barney Miller.
 ;) ;D ;D

You all remember "Bookum Dano".  Good scenery, great lead in music!  Jack Lord never with a hair out of place! 8) and Dano (James McArthur) always the faithful GOfer.  Just joshin about Mod Squad! ;D

Then there was Efferin Zimbalist Jr. with THE FBI!  Always out there solving local crime for us locals!  When they Filmed a show in the City I was a LEO in, got to meet the man and his co-star Peter Something (having one of those er, ah... moments).  Fun to watch all those take after takes to get the right shot.

Adam 12 was my personal favorite.... Followed by Dragnet.

Now I can't sit through to many of the copshows on TV. CSI (Las Vegas), Dallas SWAT and an occasional episode of the Shield are about all I can stomach. Miami Vice was entertaining in the 80's but not as good now. Andy Griffith re-runs are great at 2 in the morning when you can't sleep and the rest of the house is off to bed... (Got to love those graveyard shift days off, huh?)

Well, being as how my real name is/was Officer. "Molloy," in the old days (70s and 80s) I always got kidding about being Adam 12.

One time in the the  mid 70s I was an Investigator for the Army on Fort Ord.  Took down a civilian drug dealer, identifying myself as "Investigator Molloy."  He immediately started laughing and singing as I arrested him and cuffed him "I don believe it, I don believe it. I done been busted by Adam 12!" I guess it was better than him fighting me <g>.

I ran into him years later in a grocery store in Grass Valley (after I was a civilian deputy instead of an Army investigator).  He recognized me and laughing said "Damn, you be that Adam-12 that busted me for sellin dope on Fort Ord!" He shook my hand (believe it or not) and walked out of the store laughing!

In the mid 90s, I was partnered with a Deputy Reed due to a vehicle shortage.  Of course that night thje sgt. and dispatch assigned us the call sign of "3-Adam-12" (3 instead of 1, because we were swing shift).

I'm there with you T.L....

In my department, back a few years (it's changed since then), our call signs were set up as follows: Beat area, single man car=P, two man car=A, car number.... Normally I worked 1P12... then I ended up with a partner for a while, and became, by default, 1A12... over the radio it was "One-Adam-Twelve"...... We had a dispatcher that couldn't resist it, and each time we got a call, it was "One-Adam-Twelve, See the man....."

My then partner, now Sergeant, has an autographed photo of "Ofc. Reed", with an actual era LAPD badge, in a nice framed shadow box on the wall behind his desk..... The newer rookies look at it and ask if that is a picture of his father.... and that makes me feel really old..... they don't have a clue what Adam 12 even was......

What is really sad is that in 1999, I was a basic academy co-ordinator and Tactical officer at a Bay area police academy for a year just after I retired.

One:  Not a single recruit out of 54 knew what "Adam 12" was.

Two, and much more depressing, when telling them not to do a "John Wayne" and go into a violent call without back up is possible... NOT A SINGLE RECRUIT KNEW WHO JOHN WAYNE WAS!!!!!! :o :o :o :o

As said many times before Barney Miller and Hill Street. I would like to flip those glasses off the nose of David Caruso on CSI Miami on Monday nights. I can't believe that crap. I have never seen a crime scene unit do a physical arrest. The work that they do has made many arrest. The best one at this time is NCIS. This has been a slow walk down the back alleys of old memories....
I have always enjoyed Dragnet; later ones with Harry Morgan. I have every reprinted DVD I can find on that show.
I liked one of the Miami Vice shows...The one where Willie Nelson played a retired Texas Ranger who lit up some dopers in a          graveyard.

Back to reality: One of my mentors in 1971 liked to say, "you couldn't make this shit up."

'Police Story'

'LA Dragnet'

'Peter Gunn'

'Naked City'

This could really become a long list - I first 'listened' to 'Dragnet' on the radio, and probably watched all of the various shows at one time or another.

I was in to Longmire.... had issue finding it as it was bounced around A&E a good bit ...now its on Netflix I understand.

Barney Miller , NYPD Blue  & Hill Sreeet Blue were my go to shows,  and the Miami Vice's Pilot & first season as I said I was partial to.
Vice went several more seasons, but I was doing feature films by then.

There was another one I worked on Pilot & 1st. & only season  " Caribe " filmed in Miami 1975 stared Stacy Keach,  lasted only one season.

Longmire

As a kid I loved firemen, and at 4 years old I didn't know what Johnny and Roy were doing to people when not on fire calls, but I knew I was gonna do that when I grew up... And by dag gum I did!!!

ADAM-12 got me into policing for 8 years, and my partner was of the character of integrity like Reed and Malloy and he was my mentor.
