Website Gone?

Ok,

So when did the GAF Website go away?  I'm not talking about the website being down, I am talking about it being gone!

It appears that nobody bothered to renew the domain name.
It expired Feb. 14th (today).
And was immediately grabbed by a name holder and re-directed to their site.
Note the expiration: 2008 is the NEW DOMAIN OWNERS expiration.

(This does not mean the new owner owns content, too? Did all that info just vanish like mist, or is it saved to a hard drive or disc somewhere?)


I know that this has blindsided us, but somehow I would have hoped the original web master could have been able to alert someone to at least be aware of the timeframe for the expiration date?

Can we recreate the site by purchasing a new domain using slightly altered titling?

I am pretty sure if you knew what the IP address of the server is, you could type in it and get to the website. You just can't get to it using GRANDARMYOFTHEFRONTIER.ORG.

Before you all get all lathered up, looking at what Hedley posted, Joe Bethancourt is a cowboy shooter, I believe he might also be a GAF member, his SASS alias is Sam Hanes if I remember correctly, and he's one of the good guys.  I know he hosts the website for Big Ed's San Pedro Saddley plus a few others, so you might want to contact him, maybe it's his intention to host the site...  Ten again, maybe he's holding it hostage so you all will buy his music CD's.....

Sorry RCJ, not kidding.
Just went thru this with another cowboy club that has web pages on the Open Range Server. They lost track of the expiration and ended up getting a new domain name.

And the content is still intact, on the same server it was on. Whoever had access to the site still can get to it. Nothing needs to be changed there, once the old or a new domain is registered, it will point right to the info.

And yes, the simplest and cheapest way is to get a new domain.

I have no idea who purchased the original domain name.
Whoever did, put Joe Bethancourt aka Sam Hane as the contact. Perhaps US Scout can contact him for more info.

At this point, it doesn't matter who is hosting the site.
The domain name is gone, and can only come back if purchased again.
For who knows how much.

In the old days, you had 30 days grace to renew your domain. Now there are companies that troll for expiring sites and grab the name the literal second they expire.
They paid a small fee to grab the name for a year and then they want $ to sell it back to you.

Not cowboy, but (unfortunately) legal.

I know Joe through the SCA, I'll send him an email to find out what he plans on doing with the URL.  Worst case scenario We rebuild the website on another server. (I'll volunteer mine if need be)

Usually when a domain name is about to expire the owner is notified. I wonder what happened this time.

We may have to select a variation of the original domain name if the original one is gone.

Sam Hane (Joe Locksley) has contacts with illusions.com. He got us the web site for nothing. Perhaps someone at illusions did not remind him of the upcoming event...

In any case, perhaps Bull and others can think of a new domain name (gaf.org?), register it at a new ISP and upload the site again. I understand this is a bit of a problem, but this can be handled easily...

I am hoping to buy a server within the next few months. I would donate space on the server for the web site since the server I hope to be buying will have 396GB of storage on it in a RAID5 configuration. Once I contact the ISP, I shall get my company domain name registered and will see how much it costs to register another domain name to the same IP address pool...

Have faith. Try to set up the site again on a free server for a bit...

GAF.org is taken btw, I checked.

I have tried a couple email address for Sam Hane and have had no luck contacting him. It appears to me we still have a few days to save our domain name but we have to have Sam do it. If anyone can get in touch with him pronto and alert him to our situation please do so ASAP!!
