These triggers suck
« on: March 15, 2023, 02:06:44 PM »
I've been shooting three antique marlins this winter and have gotten really spoiled by their triggers.
Then I got back to my three uberti 76s. I had to check and make sure they were fully cooked. Something has to give besides my finger!.  I recall lightening up the trigger on the 45 60 I had in the last decade. I'm going to have to start taking the triggers out and stoning them. Shooting a rifle with a heavy pull ain't much fun.

People think of lightening the hammer spring for being able to lever and shoot faster, as in the pistol caliber guns.  But that will also lighten the trigger.  I expect you could lighten the main spring at least somewhat without compromising ignition and it should help some.  At the very least, make sure the strain screw is not adding tension.  Then stone away!

Thanks. I'll have to take one of these apart and re remember what makes these tick. Stoning is always fun, doesn't take much to go too far. Maybe I should have some extra parts on hand... :P

I worked over my Uberti shortly after opening the box. The lever spring required a near death grip. My action job consisted mainly of reducing the lever safety spring trigger spring & mainspring, plus finishing of the sear surfaces with an extra fine polishing stone. Mainspring was the toughest part - had to gring in a tiny little flat spot & groove at the "hook" - sping wanted to periodically pop out of place while using the rifle. It's been holding tight after that last mod - several years ago & lottsa shoosting 😆

Yep, I have several guns with heavy lever springs too.  Nothing like having to hold the lever with a death grip while pulling the trigger with all your might. I really got spoiled with my antique marlins.

same here with the mainspring ----I detensioned it and migrated to Federal primers and the trigger pull was fixed but that dang spring walked out from under the hook shot by shot - took ten or a few more and it slipped right out

The little lever latch gizmo is safe in its new home (plastic bag in my parts drawer where we keep bits we didnt really need )

Right after I bought my Uberti '76 the mainspring dis engaged also. It was too short and a piece of junk. So I made a new one, properly tapered it in both directions and made it slightly longer. Now works and feels correct.

on my 1st 76, the 45/75, I had a problem with the main spring falling out, tension screw all the way in. The fine folks here helped me out, works great. 3 pages worth but we got it figgered out. https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=62407.0
