Howdy Marshal Will

I like it too, what stamp did you use for your wing shaped stamp that runs into the flower, this is really nice , it's some what like WC stamp that he used on his knife sheath, but a little larger, this is a real classy look, and your stamping looks to be perfect, this is a nice addition to the Library, maybe you could get WC's knife sheath and post it here to so we could have a comparison of the two designs. Thanks for sharing Will

Thanks, pards.

10W, that stamp is a meander stamp I made years ago. The first stamp I ever made, actually. I copied it from one Charlie Miller made. I just used the side of it and held it at an angle, advancing a little for each tap. Here's the meander:

  ;D Howdy Marshal Will

Wow thats hard to believe that you could get that kind of impression from this meander stamp, all I can say is you have a really steady hand, and to be able to place that stamp as you did and get these results is really something, the fact that you made such a neat meander is pretty special too, WLL DONE Pard, thanks for the explanation.

Hi Marshall. That's a neat little tool and creative ways of using it, too.
Good stuff!!!

Thanks, X-pen. I've used that tool many different ways except as a meander. I really prefer a rounded meander over that. There must be a dozen ways to use a tool like that. Someday we'll have to have a thread to see who can use any one tool the most ways.

 :)MW,
When I first started and didn't have many stamps you told me that you had made a lot of yours and how to do it! But this is the very first time you have showed me one, and I LIKE IT :) When I get back in the mood i got to make me one of them!

Thanks for Sharing!

Thanks, Ace. I's good to get inspired to make your own. It adds a dimension to your work that can't be found otherwise. The double meander I posted is one I made. Another pair of them I made are on the fern pattern on the right holster of my outlaw rig. The border on my Dodge City holster is another example. Most of my holsters have at least one stamp I've made. You've seen some, it just isn't always obvious.

Typically, you cut the pattern outline with a swivel knife then start adding different layers of stamps to the pattern to make it look three dimensional. The stamps are used with a small rawhide, plastic or wooden mallet when the leather is "cased" or wetted to a still firm degree. There are some good books and videos available for learning this from leather suppliers like Tandy, Hide Crafters and/or some of the pards that post here, like Chuck, WC, Will and several others. WC posted a great illustration of the order it's typically done: http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=22118.0.

OK, who has videos or books available or who knows of some to recommend?

Thanks Marshall, I assume from the use of a mallet that the stamps are made of metal, similar to a punch, and commercially available?? I also assume some of you make your own stamps for new patterns??

Yes to both. You can find 'em on ebay, too. Just do a search for leather stamps.

RT, those are classic old timey cuffs. I like them a lot and I appreciate you showing them here. I have now found a pair of cuffs that have given me inspiration for making my own.

Don 101, what tools did you use for the border above. Those little dots along the inside and outside are a nice touch.
