This has potential to be a great post! I do not know the answer to this but wanted to post nearly the same question..

I have not had the chance to fire my new Tom Horn 45-60 but am trying to figure out if my tang peep sight it came with will work out to 250 yards I've always wanted a site that can shoot steel at a squeeze over 300 yards as this is my favorite shooting spots maximum range. so I look forward to learning the limits of this stock tang peep on the Tom Horn..

Anyone ever put those fancy 45 sharps larue i think their called sights on these? Thanks for posing the question..

I got a "Lyman # 2" for my .45-60 rifle with 28" barrel several years ago.
I also replaced the original front sight for a Lyman Ivory Bead sight.
I believe I got mine from Dixie Gun Works, and that it was marked "for Win. M1876".
Now I can't find it on their site, and the closest I come are what Buffalo Arms Company has in stock...;

https://www.buffaloarms.com/target-44-iron-sights-optics/lyman.html

(I'm thinking it would be possible to fit the one marked "for Win. M1886" to the M1876 too, but You might have to drill and tap a new hole in the tang.  Possibly also tweak the upright angle of the tang sight.)

I have since added an offset scope mount and a 3X Malcom "short scope" from Leatherwood Optics.
The dust-cover and original rear-sight had to be removed to fit the scope.
By filing a notch/groove in the front scope mount I'm able to use the tang sight also.
Should You be interested in period scopes You might also want to check out OpticsPlanet.com in addition to Dixie and Buffalo Arms.

I'm using the latest Marbles rear tang. Has windage adjustment & midrange upright. I'm hitting steel, so far 275 yds is furthest. My backyard targets go out to 250 yds (16"x17" target). Considering a beech front, but I'm just using the factory front for now. I have 28" bbl & the hardest part of aiming is consistently centering the front blade. I would go straight to an aperture front, except I like the barrel sights for snap shootin' targets, deer & close up varmints. I like having ability to quickly detach the marble staff for such purposes - improves carry & firing grip during huntin' season.

I'll have to look at that ivory bead front sight mentioned & give that some thought now😆

Afterthought - the setup I have is decent as I put 6/10 shots on the plate at 200yd - offhand - a couple weeks ago & claimed top honors in black powder "cowboy": 100 yd offhand & 275yd (x-sticks) I've shot the past 4-5🤷‍♂️ yrs.

Slim

Beware aware folks, that the Model 1876 is the odd duck among early Winchester levers in regard to the angle of the drop on the stock.  Although sights for other Winchesters will fit the screw holes on the Model 1876, the sight will not be at 90 degrees from the bore when it is upright.  See the photo below as an example.

Maybe I have a one-off, but my Marbles setup is pretty close. It looked pretty close when I mounted it, but hadn't checked it until this afternoon. I have the rifle in a cradle (barrel at level) & dropped an improvised plumb bob (bullet😆) from the ceiling. I will admit it's not perfect due to a bit of play in the spring/detent design. I may be able to snug the fit when time allows.

If I wasn't using it for deer hunting, I'd definitely choose a different sight setup.

Slim

I have spied with my little eye a nice tang sight from MVA. It's price is $279 or so. So that slowed me down a bit.... :P

I've got the MVA mid range tang sight on my Uberti- 300 yards (45-60) is the max range, but 200 is better.  If you went w/ that sight, I'd consider the long range option.

I have a Lee Shaver (www.leeshavergunsmithing.com) economy soule sight on my '76 and am very happy with it.  I also put his globe front sight on the rifle.  Great guy to work with.

It depends on your intended use.  The Lee Shaver sight is great for long range work with its fine windage and elevation adjustment.  I put one on my .44-77 rolling block. But on my Uberti M1876, I put an exact reproduction of the original Winchester sporting tang sight.  For my use (informal shooting out to 200 yards) it works just fine and looks right on the rifle.

My Uberti has a good barrel and I wanted to try it out at longer ranges so its got a soule style tang sight (I made it) with adjustable eyepiece and a Lyman tunnel foresight with changeable inserts
