Vernier sight screws
« on: January 30, 2021, 06:19:07 PM »
So I took a chance and bought this vernier mid-range tang tight, but it didn't come with screws. Where would I find them for a Uberti? I'm still looking, but thought someone here would have an idea. There are no name markings, and the seller didn't know who made them. Seems a solid piece, screw holes line up on Thumper.

Your  sight is a reproduction, probably Italian made.  Any tang sights screws should work.  I would  try Montana Vintage Arms.  They have screws that will work.

Threads are the same as winchesters? So 86 tang sight screws will work, are the same?

I answered a similar question on the gunsmithing forum recently. Copied below. FYI, the set comes with 2 tang screws, a "long" & "short". Should help accommodate use with other sights.
====================================
Here's the set I used on my Uberti 1876 Rifle.
Ordered mine from Midway USA:

I'm a little surprised that the '76 threads are not metric.  I have sort of the opposite problem, I have an Uberti tang sight made for the '73 I believe (copy of a lyman), and the threads of the screws that came with it will not fit my Winchester '92, so I need to figure out which set to order for that.  I think the tang sight itself will fit fine, the holes line up and the angle is good.  The one Montana Slim mentioned has the threads listed as 10-32, but I'm not finding the threads specified on their other sets.

Edit: a quick visit to Marbles site says the #3 set fits the original '92, and that one is in stock.  :)  Lyman screws don't seem to be available separately (of course I could call them) but I would imagine the Marbles screws would work.

My new Uberti Crossfire carbine has the front screw being 10-32.  The rear screw is larger, probably the same as an original Winchester.  I just order screw sets from BA, they sell Marbles screw sets in different varieties.

Sam Simmons makes all kind of tang sight screws. They are very nice, I've got several sets from him, including custom made screws.  email: hoxycarman@hotmail.com

The Uberti 1876 tang and tang sight screws are both 10-32. Original 1876 rifles have a 12-28 tang screw, and a 10-36 (3/16-36) tang sight screw.

The special Marbles screws cited above, MAR995010, are 10-32 for the Uberti rifles. They seem to be out of stock at Buffalo Arms, too:

https://www.buffaloarms.com/screw-set-10-32x-342-10-32x1-915-10-32x2-006-mar995010

I used the Marbles screws to mount a Riflesmith tang sight on my Uberti 1876. The sight is an exact replica of the original Winchester thick-base sight, but is alas no longer made, since Axtell/Riflesmith have been out of business for some years. I had to slightly reduce the diameters of the screw heads in a lathe, in order for them to fit this sight. If you encounter this problem, you could mount the screws in the chuck of a drill press or electric drill, and employ a fine file to turn down the heads. Go slowly and measure often, so as to attain a precise fit.

Was gonna get back on this - 10x32 is correct for both screws (my Uberti) ------ a metric (M5 I think) is the same TPI but a half hair bigger diameter - have done that on a couple older guns - it will be tight - a big screwdriver and plenty oil and it will go - wont break the gun because they are identical Threads Per Inch just a teensy bit fatter - aussies have to improvise sometimes and we have converted to metric - I can buy that screw in my local engineering shop and modify the head - ordered from stateside - = months - would have to use local Midway or Brownells agents - one screw ? joking mate .........

Thanks King.  Do you crimp that over the top driving band?  What is your over all cartridge length?  If you crimp over the driving band have you ever seen the bullet get pushed into the case during recoil?  I am planning to buy a Presidio 50-95 and am trying to get all my ducks in a row.  Thanks!

On another note, I have loaded some of those Blue Falcon bullets, and they don't cycle at all, catching on the case mouth I think. Need to do some spearment'n there. Haven't fired the rifle yet at all. All this white crap piled up shoulder high, doubt I can even get to my range.

Yeah, there are no crimping grooves on those bullets. I loaded 4 with Trail Boss, and 8 each with Swiss 1 1/2 F and Goez FF BP. It's what I got. Got a Walters .030 fiber wad on top of the powder, too. Like I said, they don't feed with the lever, but loading single by hand they slide right in and the action closes with no issues.
