Cylinder almost locks up when loading gate is open..??
« on: March 03, 2018, 07:22:53 AM »
I have a Ruger NV, mod 5107, and the cylinder latch almost locks up the cylinder when the loading gate is open. See picture. What could be the cause of this? My other RNV mod 5107 have a much bigger space between the cylinder latch and cylinder when the loading gate is open..

Can I do something to get a bigger space between the cylinder latch and cylinder?

Switch the loading gate with the other Ruger, and see what that does.
If that fixes the issue, then you need a new loading gate.
You say you are in Norway(beautiful country),so I do not know if you can get the part directly from Ruger in the USA.
Best of luck,

The gate detent spring pushes the latch down when the gate opens, maybe it is worn.
You may need a new spring....

sorry to say, but if your are truly a discriminating informed saa owner the Ruger will appear as a kit gun that begs for a major tune up. they come with all kinds of deficiencies that need to be addressed. many are as rough as a cobb internally, but they can be slicked up. it takes time, money or both. i wont even mention my past experiences!

HMmmmmmmmmmmmm.  Pretty wide 'brush' you are using on Ruger.  ???
I've been run'n OMV 44's in SASS for over 15+ years.
My wife has run her Rugers for 8+ years with no issues.
You'll find more Rugers used in SASS, that all others combined.
The only issues I have had, are a couple of broken t'bars.
We don't even know the history of the OP's gun......... ;)

I just bought two Ruger Vaqueroes, one new and one slightly used. It is the used one that I have most problems with. I think that the previous owner has modified the loading gate in some way. After some work I solved the problem with making av little bend on the gate detent spring. Now the cylinder latch goes down into the frame when loading/unloading.

In Norway a new Ruger Vaquero costs about $1400 so I hoped that the gun  would be super quality. I am a little bit surprised about what people in CAS say about the need to spend a lot of time and money to tune it up for CAS. And surprisingly the new Vaquero I bought had damaged threads in the base pin latch when I got it... Not good for an expensive gun like that..

But after fixing the gate detent spring, and putting some Wolf gunsprings into my guns, I am quite happy now.. They are good guns, and shoot very good groupings, see image added.

Spent lots and lots of time with my fingers inside Rugers.  "THE" most common problem is/was undersize cylinder Throats.  The worst were always .45s.  I would suggest you have the throats in your guns checked and fix'd if necessary.
