Okay, looking for a smith to cut the barrel and reattach the front sight on a 1872 RM Opentop conversion. I don't want to wait for 2 years to get the assembly back, so one who is reasonably honest on his estimates. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Send the barrel to Coffinmaker! I'm pretty sure he still has a hacksaw. :)
But also, have you considered posting a "for trade" ad? You never know.
-
Mike is great idea, "if" he still has his shingle out.
Should that not be the case, Gary Barnes @ http://cartridgeconversion.com
Or you could order a Barrel from VTI or Cimarron and have a both the 7 1/2 and a 5 1/2 "
-
I didn't think about da Coffin man. Was trying to avoid paying almost $200 for the barrel from VTI or Cimarron. The swap is a good idea.
-
I wouldn't think anyone would need a shingle if you just send them the barrel. Is this an octagon barreled '51? If so, replacing the front sight is much easier than a blade.
Edit to add: $200? You don't need to buy another ejector assembly, just swap it over. I see barrel price is $181 at VTI, $137 at Cimarron. Although how much you wanna bet neither has it in stock. You going for 4 3/4 or 5 1/2? If you do cut it you could even take it down to the ejector housing which would be 4 1/4.

My Dear Deacon
Is that the Cimmaron? 44 or 38?
Are those barrels interchangable with the C&B ?
-
Prof, the C&B barrels are not interchangeable with any of the cartridge guns.

By shingle ?, not meaning FFL, I meant he retried.
I talk to him from time to time, he does do occasional side work for friends, and for himself.
Perhaps he'll chine in here and advise :)

:) While walking down the street one day ;).
In the merry month May!! Somebody call my name?? Thought I heard my name called. Anyway: I am in fact RETIRED!! I QUIT!! I AIN'T GONNA WORK NO MORE!!
Firstest suggestion is to advertize for a tradezie. I'd hold out for a 4 3/4.
Next Best is to inquire of VTI Gunparts and Cimarron. With a long barrel and a short barrel, it don't get no better.
Next Next best is to ship it off to Gary Barnes (Hoof Hearted) and have Gary cut it and do a sight. My specialty was to do Dove Tail Sights. Way Cool.
Perfesser!! Abilene be spot-on. Open Top Barrels and Conversion Barrels WILL NOT interchange with Cap Gun barrels. As a Point, a .38 Richards Mason barrel will mount upon an Open Top. A .44 Richards Mason WILL NOT. BOO HISSSSSS.
Play Safe Out There.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the input. It is a 45 Colt with a round barrel. I would be perfectly happy with a dovetail cut for the sight blade. My other is a 5 1/2" barrel, so I would go that length just so they match. Thanks for the suggestion on Hoof Hearted.

Ah thank you gents.... great advice for Deacon
and useful info for the rest of us barrel swappers!
do you suppose that a larger hammer might "make" it fit?

Uberti C&B and the cartridge guns are made on different arbor centers.
The replicant Cartridge Guns being slightly larger.
