Title: DOMM 2012
Post by: Delmonico on July 17, 2012, 10:11:12 AM
As Colonel Pitspiter heads out on his tour of The Department of the Atlantic, The Commissary Deptartment was asked to file a report till he is able to.

My arrival at Camp Pitspiter was at around 4;30 on the 11th. to be able to set up the kitchen and help the Colenel with any tasks that were needed.

Since we now have running water, we finished the shower:

Supper was prepared for myself, sausage from the Corner Market in Sargent (their own) and some eggs:

Bowview Haymaker showed up later and ate the leftover sausage.  He also had two days of road grime and hit the shower:

(His concern up on seeing the flash was that it would end up posted in the Barracks, there was no need for concern it did.)

The sunset over camp was wonderful also:

More setting up happened the 12th, The Colonel and Paul erected a tepee for the homeless ones there, however things didn't go well at first, and since I was sitting on the ground doing prep work and taking pictures there was no time to jump up and help, so I continued taking pictures:

But things got better:

Others arrived and set up camp, toward supper time things look a bit nasty in the west and the awning was quickly put up:

And then we got rain and wind:

But it quit after the awning blew down and "most" retreated to the tepee. The troops were fed, (report on the foods later.)

On the morning of the 13th we noticed things had not gone well for the Colonel during the night:

After breakfast the shooting began and we will rely on others for those reports.

A nice break was taken in the hottest part of the afternoons:

River City John showed up with a Swiss Vetterli and suitable ammunition:

And on Sunday morning before breakfast I was able to give it a quick test:

I will prepare a report of the meals prepared and eaten and others will file reports.

Glen Carman aka Delmonico, Chief Commissary Officer.

Back to more on my report and the food:

Wendsday evening I had a supper of sausage from the Corner Market in Sargent along with eggs.  Bow View Haymaker at the leftover sausage when he arrived:

At noon on Thursday we had roasted chops and bacon and beans:

I didn't get pictures of all the food, I got busy, but Thursday evening as troops arrived they were served chicken and dumplings, baked beans and fresh green beans, plus an apple cobbler.

Friday morning was bacon and scrambled eggs with coffee to wash it down.

Noon was beef and noodles and left over cobbler, some pictures of the noodles being made:

Friday evening was Roast pork loin,  scalloped potatoes with cheese, rye bread and sweet Irish soda bread with currents.

Saturday morning was red flannel hash, this being hash made with both potatoes and beets, I must report it was popular and I have been asked to make it again:

Saturday noon was baked macaroni and cheese with a peach cobbler.

Evening meal was meatloaf, more of the same breads and apple crisp.

Sunday we had a brunch about 10 am with sausage gravy, biscuits and scambled eggs, the eggs had the leftover meatloaf crumbled in it:

It was a grand time, but I decided early that I was still tired from having a full weekend the week previous, so I lazed around in camp and looked good for all the womenfolk that showed up. I did not shoot two of the stages, but jumped in on Stage Three to help repel the hordes trying to attack Fort Pitsptr on the crest of the hill. I can state with pride that I knocked down every one of those 25 targets without sustaining a single scratch! 'Course, they WERE mandatory hit targets, but still, I only took 26 rounds, 'er, umm . . . 27,  umm . . 28 rounds to take out the heathens.
I also tried to compete in the Long Range shoot, but in 15 rounds sent downrange 300 yds., only ONE (1) had the courtesy to show up on the paper in the black. That paper target was very useful as a fire starter for breakfast coffee the next morning . . .

It was good food, as always, along with some new dishes. The Red Flannel Hash was a winner, and the good old standbys, Beef 'n' Noodles, Pork Loin, and Biscuits 'n' Gravy very popular.  Towards Sunday, though, found myself craving salad or fruit, maybe even a wild Prairie Yogurt, as a change to the diet. (Note to self, when the thermometer hovers around 100 degrees, it's not the best time to power-carb . . .)

Happy to say the Vetterli performed flawlessly, except for those times when it didn't. 'Nuff said.

I did not take any pictures, but I did create some very poignant and dramatic ice sculptures depicting some of the camp scenes. Alas, they did not survive the return trip home.

RCJ

Forgot to mention the baked macaroni 'n' cheese!
This was the real deal, Folks. The kind where if you try to portion a modest spoonful helping onto your plate, the entire contents in the Dutch oven is pulled up with it by all the attaching strings and filaments of melted cheese, which you can't ever break as they continue to stretch and harden . . .
The next in line had your back and acted as your "cheese-detaching Buddy' until it became their turn to wrestle with the creature. God knows what the poor bloke at the end of the line had to do.
It was tasty, but seemed right out of the SyFy channel.

p.s.
Tale would not be complete without mention of the trick handle on the House of Ease Col. Pitsptr had installed on the door jamb. It had a tendency to turn as you closed the door and gap the door crack, thus locking you in.
We learned to correctly interpret the forlorn sound of pounding coming from just over the crest of the hill as a distress signal - once again a trooper fell victim to this insidious trap.

I finally made it home late yesterday.  My trip started after work on Wednesday July 11th and ended yesterday July 21st.  It took me from North Central Texas through Oklahoma and Kansas to Nebraska for the muster.  After the muster my trip continued through Nebraska and Wyoming (with some sight seeing) to Colorado where I stayed in Denver at a conference from 17th-19th.  Did more sight seeing on the 19th and 20th before heading home.  That trip took me through Colorado, New Mexico and Texas back home to Fort Worth.  Will post photos of the muster and my travels after I have time to download, resize and upload with captions.

Glad everyone is getting home and recovering safely from the action at camp Pitspitr, NE territory.  I spent a fews extra days in eastern Nebraska, attending a wedding, and visiting family and friends.  With a stop at Scruffy Skippy's and High Plains Shooters Supply to resupply some reloading components and other necessities, I  began my journey back to Arizona.  22 hours of driving in about 27 hours, and I was back home Friday morn, just after sunup.  First day back at work today and I'm wishin' I was back in that canyon with Trapdoor in hand.

And extra tin cup came home in my stuff.  Please let me know if you are missing a cup from the muster and I will get it to you.

For those that did not go and wonder about round counts for the skirmish format and since I knew what I took and counted live ones after I got home, here you go.  For the expansion era match including the long range match I shot 53 rounds of 30-06 in the Springfield 1903 and got all brass back except for 5, shot 12 rounds of .45 ACP in the 1911 and got back 1 piece of brass (no problem I got lots of them).  For the main match including long range match I shot 119 rounds of 30-40 in the 1898 Krag and got all brass back except for 8, shot 24 rounds of .38 long colt in the model 1896 colt revolver and got back all brass except 5.

While the numbers were being added up for the awards those that wanted to shot my C96 Broomhandle Mauser, 10 without the stock and 10 with the stock.  We expended 120 rounds of 30 Mauser and I got ALL the brass back.  Found that I need to put in new springs for it to function properly.  But it was fun to finally get to make it go bang and it appeared everyone who did shoot it had a blast just getting to hold it much less shoot it.  I now plan to work on getting a lead bullet load to function in the broomhandle.

I came home one tin cup short.  (that doesn't sound good, does it?)  Grey speckled enamel with a rounded bottom (more like a tea cup)  I think it was used for the spirits shared. If that's it,  Don't worry about sending it or anything I am trying to figure out a way to get to the Grand muster .

I ended up a cup short (tin CW era army issue cup w/bail) and a M-1874 tin spoon short.

Got home from the eastern tour late yesterday afternoon. Will file AAR ASAP. Eastern Tour was 3800 miles and 15 states in 7 days.

I couldn't help but notice the uniforms in the last of RSJ's photos. The sweat stains and mud grime on my blue shirt doesn't show as much as it did in real life. Hopalong Strong is striking a very strategic pose  :o

It seems to me that most reenactors look too clean and not worn enough. Not many of us had those issues by the end of the weekend. All of us had "authentic" sweat stains and a few even had "authentic" patches.  ;)

I'm beginning to think the Apple Pie & the Gunshoot Thingy Cocktails may have contributed to what may become known as the "Great Cup Shuffle of 2012." I got home short one plain tin cup, and up one blue enameled cup. Since then I visited the Ft. Sedgwick Museum and purchased a couple white enameled cups at a nearby antique shop.

Apple Pie....Mmmm, M, Mmm, Mmm, Mmmm. I'm afraid if given the chance that stuff could really sneek up behind you and whack you in the back of the head. I think I should probably take the approach that Col. Jackson takes toward tobacco in Gods and Generals, "I never touch the stuff. I find I like it too much." However; given the chance, I will probably try to just apply it "judiciously"  ;)

All the uniforms looked pretty impressive! But it appears it must be quite a bit hotter in NE than Alberta...I think that's the most "informal" I've ever seen Rattlesnake Jack look! Also noticed.....it appears that Stu Kettle has "run off" all the other scouts!

I'd like to see the ship setting THAT canvas . . . .

To: General U. S. Scout
Headquarters Grand Army of the Frontier
Near Washington City

Copies to: (Bvt.) Col. Major Matt Lewis Chief of Staff,
(Bvt.) Col. Drydock Chief of Ordnance,
(Bvt. ) Col. Bull Schmidt Adjutant ,
and The ladies and gentlemen of the GAF at large

Sir:

I have the honor to submit my report following the 2012 Department of the Missouri Headquarters Muster of the Grand Army of the Frontier. This written report supersedes the brief oral statements I presented the General Commanding at the late Gettysburg battle sight Saturday last.

My preparations continued Wednesday, July 11 when the Commissary Department Chief Delmonico and Major Bowview Haymaker arrived. With their help the camp improvements, including the new shower facility, were completed. Thursday preparations continued with the erection of the Tipi for the homeless among us, the camp shade fly and the tents of those present. That evening a thunderstorm arrived in the area with rain and wind that flattened the shade fly. This forced a retreat to the tipi to wait out the storm.

Friday morning operations commenced with the Expansion Era Match side match. A previously unused canyon had been prepared this year to allow a new look for this match. Another first this year was the use of the Staff Officer class in the EEM. I used this class to conserve my Krag ammunition for the main match. I found this class to be quite challenging as given the heat and adrenaline, holding steady on the target was nearly impossible.  It always amazes me how much the stress of the match affects the physical condition and comfort of the participant. Even though the stages are not physically demanding, they DO feel as though they are by the of the stage. Participants find themselves breathing hard and shaking at the end of their walk through the canyon.

Following lunch the group commenced the long range rifle match. The 300 yard long range rifle match was found to be quite challenging. This long range match was a paper match. The participants were allowed the afternoon to sight in their rifles.  After the weather cooled a bit the command shot the match. This was to be the first time the long range match was included in scoring for the Department Champion computations.

The Main match used the same skirmish format as the Expansion Era Match did. The stalking course in the canyons of the Camp Pitspitr area could be physically dangerous given the heat. As a precaution against this participants were required to rehydrate frequently. Before a shooter was allowed to begin his assault of the stage he was required to spend some time resting in the shade and drinking water. This way we managed to avoid any heat casualties. We also learned that the physical requirements of the stages coupled with the heat necessitates limiting the number of rifle targets to between 15 and 22. This could be increased in cooler weather. This does not sound like much shooting but we found it to be enough to be satisfying. Three stages of around 20 rifle targets will require nearly 100 rifle rounds to be expended by most shooters. This is a match that, as one participant said, truly needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

I totaled the scores early Sunday morning and the certificates were awarded to the men. At this point we broke camp and the men returned to their home quarters while I finished my preparations for my departure for my inspection tour of the Atlantic Department the next morning.

Our mess consisted of 13 shooting participants excluding camp followers. While this number was reduced by a number of unforeseen situations including heat concerns, it was still a new record for participation. I can foresee these numbers continuing to grow in each of the coming years. Each day we entertained guests and explained for them the GAF as well as our contests.

Here I should thank a number of people: The Sargent Lions Club for sponsoring the insurance; Lt. Col. Dusty Tagalon for printing the winners certificates; Lt. Col. Ned Neiderlander, for building the traveling trophies and his efforts building camp equipage, the targets and props and finally Capt. Delmonico. For those of you who missed this match, the food alone was reason enough to come to this Muster. It is simply amazing what Delmonico can make in dutch ovens. Thanks Glen!

Final results will follow.

I ended up a cup short (tin CW era army issue cup w/bail) and a M-1874 tin spoon short.

Got home from the eastern tour late yesterday afternoon. Will file AAR ASAP. Eastern Tour was 3800 miles and 15 states in 7 days.
OOPS It wasn't my cup. I found it. I am; however, still short my tin spoon. You'll recognize it if you picked it up by accident; it's made from stamped tin only slightly heavier than tin foil.  ::)

All of us had "authentic" sweat stains and a few even had "authentic" patches.  ;)

The strategic pose is because the patch I had sewn into my crotch had given way! I have now patched them properly and they will be fine for next year.

Just hang on to it and I'll pick it up sometime when I'm in Liincoln.

Uniform Question for Ned: Where did you get the white uniform, or is it simply regular white pants and shirt? Hard to tell from the still photo earlier in the thread, since the bright sunlight pretty well washed out any details.

Good morning, Pony!
The white shirt is just a band collar white shirt I had made years ago.  I can't find anything in the 1875 regulations about a specific shirt other than it was supposed to be white.  The white trousers are Marine/Navy white summer trousers from Milk Creek Mercantile.  I also had them make me an 1875 Undress Coat, but it needs alterations.  (I don't think I'd have wanted to wear it in 105 degree weather anyway!)  By next year I should have the complete Undress uniform complete with white sword belt.

OK, I wasn't sure if it was a shirt, or more of a white tunic.....but thinking back, I guess the suspenders would indicate shirt...

Colonel Pitspitr,

An excellent report.  It looks like everyone had a great time, heat notwithstanding.  Wish I could have been there but health problems prevented me from making the journey as you know.  However, I'm already planning on next year when I can drive out for a good visit.

Good to hear from you sir. I'll gladly take the field rations to see ya there!

Y'know Del, it might be a good idea to have one (1) meal like that, just to give folks a taste of 19th century field eats.  We're using the guns, uniforms, and other field gear, why not a sample of the food?

(will now proceed to take cover . . .)

Well pretty much everything we have would have been seen while in post, the other is more field rations.

I finally got my photos from the Muster downloaded from the camera and renamed, then uploaded to photo bucket.  It took 8-1/2 hours to upload the 254 photos.  I might go back and add some captions later but for now follow this link to the photos http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh56/cowtownscout/2012%20DOMM/ and I suggest you view it as a slide show.  Believe it has photos of everyone who was in attendance.  Also gives some good looks at this type of a match with views of the targets as we saw them plus some up close views of how they are made.  It also has some views of the land where this great event takes place.  Hope you enjoy and sorry it has taken me so long.  Maybe next weekend I can do the same with all the sightseeing I did on my way to Denver and the on the way home.

Sounds like a grand time.  Maybe next year or the following.  Looks like I need to invest in a couple hundred more Krag brass.
EEM match may be a good excuse to get the 03 springfield I have always wanted.  Good news is I have plenty of 06 brass most of which has been fired less than 3 times from the M1.  Should be good for once or twice more from a bolt gun is I neck size after first shot.

Is there a place to hide a 5th Wheel other than down range?  Could actually sleep on the ground during the event, but it is nice to have a dry place to keep the clothes not on my back.

Yep, depending on ground clearance a fifth whell shouldn't be a problem, but this year staying dry wasn't too much of a problem unless you count sweat.  ::) I take my fifth wheel stock trailer and flat bed up there.

Well.....Back in my younger years, I used to yake my 2wd truck a lot of places, both by itself and pulling trailers.

But nowadays, I don't like that sometimes long walk back to the house to get a tractor.

But there was that one time, I had to unhook the trailer, still took several tries to get the truck out of the valley, and drive 20 miles away to get Dad's 4X4.....

Generals don't do manual labor.  We find a colonel, who finds a major, who finds a captain, who finds a lieutenant, who finds a sergeant, who details some troops to do the job.

Having been a sergeant in the Corps a long time ago, I know better than to find a colonel - I just go direct to the sergeant.

No not you, Salt Crick Rick has named my old 1990 F-150 "The General"  he is much kinder than River City John who calls it "The Rolling Death Trap" at least my Lakota friend says it makes him homesick for the Pine Ridge when he rides in it. ;)

Del, I think the General (US Scout, not the p/u) is suggesting that maybe it's time to find a younger pickup (maybe something that's only 19 or 20) and name it The Private.  ::) Over time maybe SCR will promote it to General too.  :)

BTW, I love the smell of coffee in the morning too but maybe you could find a picture to use with that caption in which the subject matter has longer hair, less facial hair, is younger, oh, and only has X chromosomes ;D
