Yes when I said sixty I was thinking rifle. I always shot Cap and ball revolvers.

Back when we shot nearly all of the stages you needed to bring at least 100 rounds.

That was before the primer pandemic. Since then we have cut that in half.

Cwiseman,

I probably do not belong here now because I have let my membership lapse.  But, I belonged to NCOWS for 15 years from 1998 to 2013.  I figured I paid a lifetime membership through those years but, oh well.  I did all this, as just an independent person having no affiliation with a shooting club or posse.  My time and participation in NCOWS were extremely fun and the people I met were friendly and knowledgeable.  I was even the 2nd person to be accepted into the Original Class, after the originating first three members.

What I am leading to is --- first join the NCOWS group; pay your membership dues; get the booklets.

You have already gotten the costliest objects for the sport, the firearms.  Buying loaded ammo these days is going to be costly.  Look at reloading NOW.  The initial expense with be well worth it in the end.

AS FAR AS brass and primer you are AS stuck as the rest of us.  Starline is the place to go for brass.  I got the 44/40 supply that I wanted finally last September in 2022 after a yearlong look.  I had to save the link to their 44/40 listing and check it daily and then got luck to catch their availability/order time.  See below.

https://www.starlinebrass.com/44-40-brass

Most common dealers that I use to buy from just no long have brass supplies.  So, you are going to have to buy direct and pay the higher prices for larger quantities, like I just did.

Primers are the next component in short supply and the prices have skyrocketed from when I started back in 1988, with reloading.

Join up and maybe some of the members will share -- to help you out.  Good luck and have a lot of fun.

PS -- the good thing with you only using 44/40 firearm is you buy a press; one set of dies; and the right size/weight bullet with a crimp and you are finished.  No need for extra Lee factory crimp dies or Lee sizing dies.  If you want to cast bullet just buy the standard 205 210gr bullet mold and a Lee sizer.   ALL GOOD.

And it seems that the price of primers just keeps going up.

froogal,

Yes, and it is not just inflation.  Not when a box of 1000 goes from $11 in the early 1990's to the now $100-$125 range.  Sorry even I know that is not the 3X's - 4X's - or even 5X's inflation rate that is claimed.

Awhile back I bit the bullet and paid just under $100 per brick for primers. Bought enough to last awhile, or so I thought, but now I'm shopping once again for small pistol primers. The prices I am seeing are just downright depressing.

Pistol primers have been hovering around $100 for quite a while now.  Really easy to find now, too, at that price.  I've bought a LOT of them, because I shoot every weekend and by buying 5K or 10K at a time spreads out the hazmat and shipping charge.  Also the big stores regularly have free shipping or free hazmat (better than free shipping).  Buy once, cry once!  Last year I did find Federal small and small magnum at Academy for $80/K and bought about 6K of them, plus got a discount by signing up for their store card.  I don't usually shop at Academy and never thought about them for components but a friend was in there and saw them and phoned me.  If prices ever do fall, I'll just buy more and stock up.

As for 44-40 brass, everybody seems to be waiting on Starline who only makes runs every so often.  I'm wondering what happened to Winchester brass?  Their 44-40 brass had thin necks like Starline which makes them more forgiving of tight chambers.  But I haven't heard of any Winchester brass in years!  Are they using all their capacity for 9mm and .223 or stuff for the military?

You might also check gun shows for once-fired brass. Fair prices for new 44/40 brass would be around $40/100. Expect to pay $20-25/100 for used brass.

Yesterday somebody on the SASS classifieds sold some used 44-40 brass for 10c to 20c each. It sold immediately! You have to be a SASS member to sell there but I think anybody can post a Wanted ad. If there are any shooting ranges near you, see if they have a bulletin board to place a WTB.

So,
I get emails from Outdoor Limited.   I am caveating this that I have never ordered from them, but I look.   They have Fiochi 44-40 ammo available.  It is $2.00 a round.    They also have trapdoor 45-70 ammo available (.350 grain bullet) for $2.50 a round.    Just putting it out there as the price seems high and the fact that the 44-40 is not moving too quickly might indicate others think so too.

Well, they just opened 44-40 for backorders a few weeks ago.  That only lasted a day or two.  Those people have received their brass.  So likely won't be for a while again.  Sorry!

This keeps happening and only a lucky few seem to get any. Same for 32-20

Almost bought a 44-40 rifle one year ago, but didn't because of the brass situation. Really glad now that I passed on the rifle.
