1874-1876 Calvary Uniform and leather for NCO
« on: July 25, 2014, 12:00:45 PM »
Hey, guys, I'm trying to put together a Calvary uniform from 74 through 76 for a NCO as cheaply as possible. I just purchased a 73 Springfield carbine  but I have a long way to go. Vendor info and or patterns would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen the Quartermaster Depot stuff, but Quartermaster shop and Coon Creek tend to use too heavy weight wool for the blouse. The material should be about the same as a wool shirt. You might also want to check with Nick Sekela (SP?) at Gettysburg

Jerry, I checked on Nick Sekela's website and didn't find either the 72 or 74 pattern blouse. :(

You can also check out Coon River Merchantile in Des Moines.  Most authentic CW and IW uniforms I have ever seen. They did my Confederate General's uniform with which I have won many awards, especially in NCOWS (you know how picky they can be). There is also a sutler in Livingston, TX, who did my IW/GAF Chaplain's uniform, but for life of me I cannot remember their name...maybe Mercury Sutlers.  Have fun in your search as that is half the fun of getting something authentic.

God Bless and shoot safe.

http://www.mercurysutler.com/uniforms.htm      Scroll down until you find the M1874 blouse and other IW items.  Unfortunately Coon River shows no IW items on their site.

What I was told is that he has the patterns and will make IW stuff if you ask. The best guy for advice is F Trooper. He has a lot of connections with very good makers.

For leather get in touch with Trailrider Products in Denver.  Trailrider is a GAF member and posts here fairly often and has a website.  You won't find better or more correct period military leather.

Carrico Leatherworks in Edna KS.  David provided much of the leather, including horse equipment for the mini-series "Into the West", "Geronimo", "Jonah Hex", "True Grit" (the new one), and "Appaloosa", and several others.

My 1874 jacket is a 40R. and a CW Cav. jacket that is not marked but is a little big on me and should be a 42L.  We also have a pistol box unused, cap box unused, saber knot unused and brand new suspenders.  If you are interested in any of this let me know.  Too bad that you are not close enough to just drop by and try on some of the used uniforms, leathers and weapons that we have gotten too old to use.

F Trooper is the one who pointed me toward Quartermaster Depot. The uniform I won the Field uniform competition with at the Grand Muster was made by him. I have a 74 blouse on order from him. He has sent me samples of his fabric and it is similar to the fabric he used to make my shirt.

Keep in mind, as well, that the Indian fighting army was notorious for wearing non-standard items in the field.  Look at lots of photos from the period to get the idea of what they actually wore, but I would guess you already have some suitable items from cowboy shooting.
