GAF legal...I hope  ???

As it is now it is a civilian long action class rifle.  A carbine forearm, handguard and barrel band makes it a smokeless military rifle.  Nice!

Class for rifle caliber weapons in non milspec configuration.  Paired with an appropriate period handgun. Smokeless or BP.

Colt SAA or S&W #3 ( * maybe a C96  ;) ) paired with the Browning , in some sort of period clothing circa  1895-1900  I'm thinking

Pistol Caliber ?

Post by: Drydock on November 15, 2020, 06:04:01 PM
You can do that.  I've been known to do an 1890ish gunrunner now and then.  (think Dynamite Johnny O'Brien  https://thewildgeese.irish/profiles/blogs/dynamite-johnny-o-brien-a-captain-unafraid  )

It can be quite fun, as it allows me to use almost any rifle and handgun I have in most any combination.  You can also be in uniform, using private purchase weapons.  (the rifle determines your class, but you can dress any way you want if you can make the story work)

No need to limit yourself to single actions either.  Any number of DAs available in the 1890s.  Again, my gunrunner likes to pack a MK1 Webley, often paired with an Argentine Mauser.  Or if I want to be smoky, perhaps my shorty trapdoor with a MAS 1873 revolver.

Oh Baby, you just hit my wowzer button   :o

A Mauser 96 is on my short list ( now that the 1895 is in route )  If I ever find one... so very cool !

Vintage motorcycles are a warm fuzzy , but sadly out of reach...

I have 90 % of the Span/Am ....

I get into the spirit of clothing ( having been a reenactor for 30 years ) as much as the shooting...

I am making plans to attend in June

Well, with that combination you should carry a Bergmann pistol.  If you can't find one you could just dummy up a P38 to look like it.  After all that's what Hollywood did when they couldn't find one.

Alas , no yellow Stutz . no Bergmann or even an early motorcycle... as over the top cool those would be.

I could just see a cross country juant  in that rig,  armed with a C96 in shoulder rig and my trusty 1895....
Wonder what the " Media" would twist that story into. :o

If you go with the Stutz you'll need to research an entirely new set of guns.  All you need to do is find a few old episodes of the 1971 TV series "Bearcat's" set in the 1914 American South West .

Major,

Have you fired your '95 yet? I ask because I owned two of them in the past. One was a custom original chambered for the 35 Whelen. Fired with 250g hand loads that thing kicked like a mule. I eventually traded it off. A couple years later I got a deal on a used Browning in 30-40. That one kicked about the same with factory duplicate loads of 180g and 220g bullets.

If you just want to shoot that thing for fun, I'd recommend some lighter cast bullet loads. Unless of course you just like pain. Then have at it. (smiley face goes here)

It is still on the Brown Truck in route, more than likely arrive at my FFL on Wedesday...

The main fodder is the same cast bullet load or simlar as my 03 & M17.
TrailBoss & 165 Grain cast bullet.

I will also have load of Shooters World Buffalo Rifle  (Lovex D060) to work with

Go ahead & try!

When I was first able to drive by myself to the local range, I was shooting my .45-70 one day.  A gentleman next to me asked if he could try a shot or two with it, so I let him fire it a couple of times.  He then handed me his 1895 and let me fire it - .405 Winchester.  What a kick! (both from getting to shoot it and from the recoil!)  Afterwards I always wanted to get one in .30-40 Army, but never was able to afford one.

I had never held a 1895 , let alone shot one...

I had recalled seeing the above photo a few times in a box collection of old random family photos.
There was another of my Dad & Uncle as small children circa 1910 with their Granddad ( my great Grandfather ) on buckboard .
Mr Ragland (GGrandFather) was holding a Double Berral Shotgun.

These collections were in my late Sister's possession and I had not seem them in many years.
I remember seeing them but did not register the guns other they were a shotguns of some type
Way off in the 1895 case .

But something , I guess must have clicked back then...  As I aways liked Lever guns and own several , but not a 1895.

re-finding this photo was both  nostalgic and  eye opening  :D

I'm having it professionally mounted and copy enlarged for framing.... ( also the one of my Dad and Great Grand Father )

Some years ago I had another photo done,  it was of my Dad' s Father & Mother with Theodore Roosevelt.

Since pictures of my Mauser have shown up in this thread, I figured that I should pull out my 1895 for another photo. That's a sporting rifle in .30 US (.30-40) from 1899. Both guns have been refinished at some point, thus I could afford them.  Of note is the military inspector mark on the lever. My understanding is that Winchester was using up parts which had been inspected for the military contract, but not used before the contract was completed.  It's a very cool rifle.

Actually yeah, it was that one or the one with the Cuban Hut BG prop that caught my eye.
It is these video's that have spurred my attention... vicariously  :)

I played with a load(s) in my 95 yesterday ,13.1 &  14.3 grain of TB with 165 grain lead bullet from Missouri Bullet Co.
At my home gallery, 20 -25 yards is about my safety limit into my steel back stops, I'll need a trip to the range to run 50 yard tests

The 13.1 is the load I use in my 03 & M17 .... both powder charges seemed promising

One season, 14 episodes according to IMDb.  In the 70's a full season was 20+ episodes according to Wikipedia.  Guess we'll have to call this one a failure, canceled half way through the season.

The series isn't listed in the imfdb (movie/TV/video games guns data base) but the still photos I can find have the hero's using 1911's.  The only long guns are machine guns, an unshrouded Lewis Gun and some sort dummied up Vickers or Maxim maybe machine gun with a fluted water jacket (no hose) on an entirely too modern style of pedestal mount.

Bearcats? I don't remember that series.

It only lasted one season.  Stared Rod Taylor and Denis Cole.  Two trouble shooters traveling around in the Southwest U.S. in a Stutz Bearcat in the early 20th century.  The Pilot was good the series itself could have been much better.

I have the complete series.

I vaguely remember it ...looked it up , it was on against the Flip Wilson Show, which I never watched.
At that time there were 3 networks CBS, NBC & ABC ,  I have no clue what I might have watch instead.

I read it wasn't for adults. "Silly plots, ham-fisted action, stilted performances, repetitive low-budget camera work and soundtrack"

I may have dismissed it  ::)

Nice pistol!  You probably know this but make sure you use 7.62 Mauser ammo in it NOT 7.62x25 Tok ammo.  The 7.62 Tokarev ammo interchanges but it much hotter.  IIRC around 1400 FPS.
