All Four Calibers of 1876 Model .
« on: January 05, 2021, 02:34:25 PM »
From Left to right , 40-60WCF , 45-60 WCF , 45-75 WCF , 50-95 WCF . All four cartridges are loaded with Bp. and Bullets cast from Winchester molds .  In my opinion all four are great cartridges and have a good reason why they were offered . ,,,DT

Well, shucks. Here I thought we were going see a pic of your 76 collection! Nice pic of the rounds tho. I have 2 so far, in the Uberti's. 45/75 and 50/95. 2 to go.

Cool picture and I like what it implies...that you shoot all four!

Thanks for the pics Mr. D.T.!!  All four are indeed great rounds.  Loading these cartridges is second only to shooting them!!  Finding sources of cases for loading the 45-75 has become a favorite pass time. There are still good sources out there as well as forming you own.  Now need some time and decent weather to go empty some cases at the range!!! ;D

'You is' a luck man DT.  Nice to see all of them represented.  I would 'not mind' having another caliber in one of those big rifles.

I will show my ignorance here, but did any of those cartridges exist before the '76 or where any developed specifically for that rifle?

I will probably show mine too by trying to answer your question .  Yes they were developed for the 1876 .The 45-75 was the second centerfire cartridge Winchester produced after the 44WCF . The 45-75 WCF was the proprietary cartridge of the 1876 Win . The 45-60 WCF was developed for the 76  because some wanted a Reduced Load Cartridge  and it was called that . The 50-95 WCF was designed after these two , ( I Think ) ! Supposedly to compete with big game rifles around the world at a lower cost than the British competitors . The 40-60 WCF was developed for the 76 to compete with the other 40 Caliber cartridges of the time , and offer a lighter and flatter shooting cartridge and that it was . Winchester sold ammunition and developing new cartridges caused more demand (sales) . As far as I know all four cartridges were developed for the 1876 but other guns were chambered for these same cartridges .  The 1885 Winchester and Colt and  Whitney-Kennedy rifles .,,,,,,,,DT

Here's my photo of the "four horsemen" of the Model 1876.  This is my original photo, it has been used by others (uncredited) but was taken by me sometime back in the early 2000's.  These are original cartridges, which I still have.  I used Adobe Photoshop to label them.

I would love to find a large frame Colt Lightning or Winchester Single shot rifle in .50-95 Express.  Rare and expensive!
