Actually, Sarge, it's a .44 mag that I will be shooting .44 Russians in.

And, BTW, I have since replaced the faux ivories in this photo with a custom set of white bone grips. I need to get a new shot with the new grips. I really like the way they look.

Here are my Rugers:

Ruger Vaquero, Gunslinger Action job by Lee's Gunsmithing and serrated the front sight installed a stronger base pin latch nut, and free spin pawled it; I installed a Belt Mountain base pin, a Dave Clements crescent ejector rod, a SBH hammer after modifying the width, ( a little smaller yet still kept the contour = 8 hours work by hand)and corrected the timming with a hammer plunger modification. All I need to do now is open the throats to .4525 and shoot, shoot shoot! ;D

Those are black Gabboon Ebony Gunfighter grips too from Cary C. but my buddy decided to spin my revolver and luckily it hit the floor on the edge of the grips which cracked them both, yes luckily because they took the force instead of my frame, thank goodness.

Here are the new grips:
I need to update pics as they do not reflect all that has been done, ..... crescent ejector rod, SBH.

Ruger GP100 - 6" Stainless Steel

Bowen Rear Sight, now has a Millet orange front sight and I refinished the grips - not shown.

Irish;  Silver Creek Slim sent me a note that you had cut an old model Ruger into a Sheriff's model, and you sure did! Man that looks Great! Does the front of the frame have enough steel under the ejector housing cutout or did you have to build it up? Did you recontour the frame with a milling machine or is this all hand work? I've been a machinist for Owens Corning for 32 years, and already have 5 Stainless Vaqueros so will be hacking away on one of my own soon. Thanks for any light you can shed and thanks to Silver Creek Slim for the heads up.  ;D

Much obliged, Wakatomika Creek and thanks for the kind words.

1) The frame beneath the ejector rod housing bolster is slightly thinner than the rest of what surrounds the barrel. Still, I did not build it up as it appears thick enough to remain safe and stable. I also had an expert gunsmith mill and mount the front sight and he made no mention of it being too thin. I was very careful not to remove any more material in that area than was absolutely necessary to recontour the frame. I think a person could get carried away and remove too much material fairly easily if they weren't conscious of this situation. This is the second RV I've so modified. The first is a .45LC version. I have shot the .45 quite a bit and have seen no indication of stessing at all. Then again, I'm using these only for cowboy (Colt or clone) type loads -- mid-pressure .45s and will be shooting .44 Russians in this one. If I had intended to shoot excessive pressure, full-house, cannon rounds in these,  I might have thought more about building up the frame.

2) It's all hand work using a Dremel, files, stones and abrasives.

Hopse this helps and good luck on cutting yours. If you have any other questions, just post'em here or PM me.

Sgt C:

I still wanna add all of our RATS's Ruger pictures to the RATS site.  I bought a LOAD of space from the web-sellin' outfit.
Right now our webmaster is havin' some family emergencies.  So it'll happen when it does.  I ain't ventured there my own self for over a week.

We was gonna add some pdf's of the exploded views from the Ruger owner's manuals.  Wonder if'n Ruger would get unhappy 'bout that?

Yup, for use in CAS. Fake eagle feathers and scalp locks, of course.

Quote
what is the spike for just above the top feather.

I actually made this for use as a standing rifle rest in long-distance shooting.  The crosspiece is for the rifle.  One little problem, though.  I forgot to consider how hard the ground is in SoCal.  ??? ??? ??? The lance-head will only penetrate about an inch into the ground, which isn't enough to provide stability.

Still, though, it looks good on the side of my gun cart.

Howdy  Daniel Nigtheyes

You did a real nice job on this lance, It's to bad the ground is so hard, I live in So. Calif. too, so I know where your coming from , Daniel you might want to carry a pick axe on your cart,it would help you break up that hard California ground. Just kidding, :D but anyway it's a good idea. I saw you on another post, you were shooting a brace of cap & ball six guns, looks like fun,one of these days Im going to give bp a try, I built a 54 cal Santa Fe Hawken several years ago, and haven't gone back to it in some time. Daniel are your ancestor's of the Nez Perce, I noticed your trade mark at the bottom of your post .

You have a great day Daniel Nirgteyes :)

Howdy Rats around the fire!  Got a couple of pair of my own to show ya . . . .

First pair is a set of OMV's bought just about when Ruger came out with the idea of the Vaquero - a set of short SS .45's, both tuned by Oglesby &  Oglesby - and they'll hold 1" at 20.  A sweet pair of shooters.

The second set is my brand spanking new Munden tuned NMV's, and they'll shoot all the rounds through the same hole - hot doggies but these guns are sweet!

I'll hav eto get more Ruger Vaqueros now that they've come out with the NMV - that is the nicest Single action I've ever shot - better any Colt out there - period!

Ride safe folks -

This is my latest Ruger project.  This is an Acusport Bisley 45LC/45ACP.  I installed a Bowen Rough Country rear sight, then added a Power Custom Hammer/Trigger kit.  This gives me a half cock with indexing for loading.  I use blue for the hammer and trigger because I liked the contrast.  Had Cary Chapman make me grips out of Amboyna Burl.   I also want to add a Belt Mountain #5 Base pin, and may have the gun bead blasted to a matte finish.

Hey Pards!

Well I did it, went out today and tried on a few pistols and ended up purchasing an old model Vaquero in 45LC with 5.5" barrel. Can't wait to get out and throw some lead. Any suggestions on cartridges seeing I'm still without because the two guns shops I visited had none.  :(

Looks like I've gone from Greenhorn to Rat and Warthog in a day, well I spose I should do some shooting right quick for the latter title to apply.

Once I get out shooting I'll have more of an idea of where I'm headed with this new venture
and pick up a second one in the spring.

Just received these new grips today.  American Holly made by Cary Chapman.  I picked up the Super Blackhawk on Gunbroker not too long ago.  I think the American Holly compliments the engraving nicely.

Okay,

I have a pic of all my short barrels ... but if I put it below, I will not have enough bytes for any detail.

Can someone give this non-techie all the steps to putting a large pic inside the frame here/

And what is the maximum amount of bytes that this frame can handle (as opposed to the 150 mb in the little pics at the bottom (i.e. outside the frame)?

Thanks!

Dog River Dan,

Why thank you!

All the guns were bought from online classified here on cascity.com or from other local SASS members.

The big Bowie is a Chuck Burrows product where he customized a standard Indian Damascus/Wootz Bowie. The smaller knife is a standard Belduque from Crazy Crowe.

All the black powder accessories came in a great deal for the Ruger Old Armys ...

So I have been very blessed .... *S*

Good job on the antiquing, but it looks like the back strap and trigger guard are brass , and there looks to be some corrosion on the trigger guard, is that what I'm seeing in this picture or is it just the lighting? other than that it looks great, I like the look of a antiqued gun, it looks the part.

Sure looks like verdigre (spelling?) to me. The antiqued guns are sure popular, but unfortunately, lost on me. Back in the days of the old west, the guns would have invariably been in good condition as they had only been on the market for twenty years or so.

The spelling of Verdigris is always a miss for most, but that's just what it looks like, I didn't know Ruger made new model Vaqueros with brass back straps and trigger guard, but that's what it looks like, talking about bluing, it seems back in that time period, the formula for bluing wasn't as good/strong as it is today in most cases, and would come off much easier then than now, and some guns were just finished in the white, where rust and coloration would take over a guns finish very fast, and even when kept oiled the stains were permanent. My Granddads Colt 45 artillery model 5 1/2" barrel, looked like one of the antiqued guns, but I think it really looked nice, there is something about the natural patina the metal takes on with age that looks good, at least to me.
Title: Re: Time To Show Em' Off...........
Post by: andy42s on June 01, 2010, 07:37:46 PM
You are correct Ten Wolves, it is a brass grip frame. The NVs don't come with them, it was a custom job. Lots of hand fitting. After "antiquing" the frame and everything, it looked very odd with a bright, shiny brass grip frame. I "antiqued" that as well. And to Four Fingers, a revolver worn on the hip of a rancher for 20 years in all weather would look similar to this.

All right, here is mine: '57 Tri-Color Lightweight Single Six. It is a pretty rare piece in this variation. Please lemme know if you have one or have ever seen one. I think they are pretty neat. My grandfather passed this one down to me, and has a lot of history.

Here we go with my Ruger Iron...

I got my pair of Montado's today so here they are still unfired
(http://www.dragonsightsoftware.com/driften/images/NewVaquero.jpg)
And in Leather
(http://www.dragonsightsoftware.com/driften/images/NewAtHomeInHolsters.jpg)
And here is the Ruger revolver family
(http://www.dragonsightsoftware.com/driften/images/RugerFamily.jpg)

And just to show here they are with my old match guns that still shoot great
(http://www.dragonsightsoftware.com/driften/images/NewAndOld.jpg)

Now just need to decide how I want to change them... I don't care for the stock grips... I have wolf springs sitting and ready to go in. I like them on my Blackhawk and they should slick up the Vaquero's just nice. I plan on just using the trigger spring and base pin spring. I did not feel like the hammer spring was needed on the Blackhawk that also had the stupid lock.

Here's my two!  Lipsey's Rugers in .44 Special, one with a 4 5/8" barrel and the other a Sheriff's Model with a 3 3/4" barrel, both stainless.  I have replaced the original New Vaquero hammers with old-style Vaquero hammers.  I like the way they look and feel with the old-style hammers.  The 4 5/8" one will be wearing Grashorn's Gunworks elk stags when I get home next month, and the Sheriff's Model will be sporting Eagle Grips smooth rosewood grips.

Here are my single action Rugers

The Vaqueros are in the center line in pairs. The first two are .44 Mag with 7 1/2" barrels is blue/case with bone grips. The second pair are SS Bisley Vaqueros in .44 Mag with 5 1/2" barrels. The next pair are Birdshead Vaqueros with 3 1/2" barrels in .45 Colt; the greatest western hide out pistols ever built. Below them are two 5 1/2" SS Vaqueros in .45 Colt with Ruger faux ivory grips. The next pair are 7 1/2" .44-40s blue/case with stag grips. The last below them is my 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk that I've used to take 2 California wild boar in the Salinas Valley, and one black bear in the Sierras, wearing Pachmayer grips. On the right side is my 50th anniversary 7 1/2" barreled Ruger Flat Top .44 Magnum and a 1973 Ruger Blackhawk .357 Mag with a 9mm conversion cylinder and ivory grips. On the left is a 50th Anniversary Flat Top Blackhawk .357 Magnum, and another convertible, a 5 1/2" barreled SS Ruger Bisley Blackhawk in .45 Colt and a interchangeable .45 ACP cylinder. That pistol is a bit weird, as I have shot a dozen or more factory and handloads through it with both cylinders, and it shoot most accurately with the Wolf steel cased .45 ACP ammunition, cutting cloverleafs at 25 yards. ???

I will admit that I have the Ruger Acquisition Syndrome, a bad case, but I really don't care. I buy guns, ammo and reloading components first, then buy food and pay for gasoline and everything else with what is left over. ;D

I was out at the range a couple of days ago and I had my 10-1/2" Ruger SBH with me. It had been awhile since I had shot it, so I figured I would try my hand at the 100 yard steel plates with it.

Well, one of my CAS buddies was there and he took a real liking to it. He had a NIB stainless Ruger NV with a 7-1/2" barrel in .45 Colt, so we ended up swapping!

This one is a perfect match to the one I bought off of him several months back.

Here is my SBH:

The NV from him:
