Got me a rifle!
« on: December 31, 2018, 01:59:31 PM »
My loving wife got me a late Christmas present today, a Browning 1886 rifle! I have the Carbine already, had it for 25 years, always wanted the rifle. Now the wait for delivery. Happy New Year!

I owned one of the Browning rifles years ago. It was finely made and shot both smokeless and BP well. Sold it when I got an original '86 to replace it. Sadly that too is now gone.

Very nice. At one time I had both the rifle and SRC. Like a dummy I sold the rifle as I preferred the SRC. I was easier to carry when hunting. I missed the rifle so not long ago I purchased the Winchester Deluxe short rifle and like it a lot.

I can remember trying to order one of those when they first came out. Priced at around $450-500 if I can remember back that far. Was a young GI with a small but growing family at the time, and the local dealers couldn't find one for anything. After it was announced that the entire run was sold out, I was told they were available, but being in such high demand and with no more being made the price being asked by the jobbers was between $900-1000. Needless to say I've never owned one of the Browning. :'( So after I retired, I bought a 3 digit serial number original 1886 in 45-70, the barrel was cut a couple of inches, but I got it almost 20 years later for around $1000. ;D

I have both a Browning '86 rifle and a Marlin 45-70 with 22" barrel. The Browning is heads and shoulders above the Marlin in every way, including accuracy, but the Marlin has sling swivels which makes it a better bet for hunting.

Always wanted an '86 SRC, but people tell me that I'm better off with the rifle.

You have a very nice Queen there King Medallion. I picked up an old 1970s Browning 1895 rifle in .30-06. Pre mirouku tang safety. Looks like new. I plan on putting it back into a full military reproduction stock to make it resemble the NRA musket. The NRA used a lot of Krag parts for these 1920-1930s rebuilds. The first batch were in .30-40 but the second batch were chambered in the more ‘modern’ .30-06. Ought to be an interesting build.

Took Boomer out today and fired off a few rounds. I thinks its gonna be a keeper. Knocking down steel targets at 150 yards fairly regular.   ;D

No, I meant your wife. Wives who buy their husbands Model 1886 rifles are worth their weight in gold!

HA! I am not suicidal! The rifle weighs 9.6lbs empty. I will say my wife is worth a heck of a lot more than her weight in gold.

Don't get me started on M1886 Winchesters! The only thing that could have been done to improve ballistics would have been to come out with a .33 WCF Improved ("blown" shoulder with the .338" Jacketed Flat Point Hornady used to make).  But I'd take 'em in about any of the original calibers! The only ones that could give you headaches were the .40 caliber jobs. Winchester couldn't seem to make up their mind about the groove diameters. Seen 'em vary from .403 - .410!  :P  Also, they should have stayed with the 1-22" twist in the .45-90, but they meant that for use with the 300 gr. bullet, so went with IIRC 1-36", which wouldn't stabilize anything heavier than 385 gr. Best thing John Moses came up with except for the M2 "Ma Deuce".
