SpanAm Campaign Hat
« on: August 14, 2020, 03:14:49 PM »
I’m having trouble finding a correct 1898 campaign hat. The places I’ve gone to before for such things - Quartermaster Shop, US History, S&S - can’t help. Anyone got a suggestion for a place I’m not aware of?

There were so many variations, from so many contractors, that most any broad brim tan felt hat is "correct"  These are as good as any, and better than most. https://www.riverjunction.com/model_1883_campaign_hat.html

Here's one displayed by some odd old coot.  They tend to bleach in the sun,  as did the originals.

Hi

What Price Glory at least had them in most of the sizes.

I bought mine in Undyed Natural fur felt from Mike Moore from Buckaroo Hatters in Covington Tennessee.  If memory serves, and in spite of the OKLA in Okla Tom, you're a Texan.  One of the Texas hatters should be able to make you one in exactly your size.

I've used one of these for years, and it's held up quite well.

Just to set the record straight, Oklahoma Tom was indeed born in 'The Territories', but currently resides in Texas. No doubt the hat linked was way too small for my pard's noggin'. Take this as some ome shorter in stature with a greater pumpkin. You may read that as Fat Head if you choose.

Took 3 tries from Dirty Billys Hats in Gettysburg to get one that fit my head. Either I can’t measure or they cant read, I finally took a side trip up there from Thurmont, Md and they measured my noggin.  That one fit.

I got one from Dirty BIlly as well.  Over 20 years ago! (shocked it's been that long)  After I finally got it I swore I'd never deal with that cantankerous, mean spirited SOB ever again!  River Junction is just as good, faster, cheaper, and a pleasure to deal with.

Hi

I saw that River Junction sells Fur Felt not just Wool Felt.  My very first hat was Wool and never again, shrunk up in the rain dammit.  Bunny, Beaver, and Large Rat (Nutria) hats don't do that.

Wool hats won't shrink if you wear them until they're dry!

Yes, but that would have been a smelly two days.  It got WET.  I had a then new wool Aussie Slouch hat, I got caught at the range in a down pour, the size was still right, but the taper more than doubled.
