AA shotshells - Grey the same as red?
« on: February 26, 2023, 06:16:57 PM »
Howdy Reloaders,

I was recently gifted a trash bag of fired shotshells. In with the red AA's were a bunch of grey shells marked as AA's. A quick look at my Lyman SS handbook only shows AA's as red. Some measuring and critical eyeballing seems to show these are the same. Being new to shotshell reloading, I thought I'd consult cowboys who have more experience than me.

What's the deal here?

Rev. Chase

Howdy Rev, I don't know if they are exactly the same or not, but at least are close as I've loaded a few gray ones along with the reds and they seem to come out the same.

this is hard to admit but once upon a time I shot skeet...a lot In one year i filled a gallon can with spent primers loading AA shells. if they say AA the color makes no difference. Why I have no idea because some were lack but loaded the same.

Hello Reverend,
I reload AA for skeet, 5 stand, and my Cowboy loads. Load Silver and Red AA's identically.  All of the silver AA's I checked said "Super Handicap", so they are 3 dram loads typically.  But again, I've not encountered any difference to date.
Best of luck,
Red Oak

There was even an ultra_low brass A A shell. I consider all old AAs as identical for reloading purposes. What I did do was separate each different colour phase to a particular recipe. As an example, I load the pink ones with a featherlight recipe of pink feathers!

 :) Well Now  ;)

Use to shoot with guy here in my neck of the woods, who would load his 12Ga shotgun with all manner of "strange" stuff.  Pink feathers, Blue feathers, Red feathers, and stuff to make different color "smoke" clouds.  Blue, Orange, Green, really fun stuff haven't seen him in several years however.

This Morning Missive has ZERO input for the OP.  Doesn't add anything of note.  It is however, Sunday Morning.  It's cold outside, my dog is asleep, my sweetheart is out of town and I am some bored.  So here ya are.  Useless trivia included with meaningless drivel.  I'd have quit reading before I got this far, but iffy you have gotten this far, it's TOO LATE.  Nanny Nanny Poo Poo

Almost forgot.  As an additional "No Help," I don't reload plastic hulls at all.  Never have.  I shoot ALL BRASS 12Ga.  Zip-a-De-Du-Da!!

The gray ones are super handicap shells from factory but reload the same as the red ones.
