Winchester 244 powder
« on: December 05, 2022, 09:57:17 AM »
Has anybody used the 244 yet? Looks like it could be a substitute for Unique.

.45 Colt with a 200 grain bullet calls for 6.7 grains to 9 grains. Very similar to Unique.

I just started using 244

For the reason you describe... Unique is not available anywhere that I am aware of... I have been using 244 in 45 Colt and 44-40... There is not much reloading data on 244 probably because it’s a relatively new power, so I have been proceeding with caution and have been satisfied with its performance... it’s not as dirty as unique and has similar performance characteristics.

Got a chance today to test the 244. 6.7 grains of 244 under a 200 grain LRNFP. 10 shots with a Uberti revolver with 4 3/4" barrel. Target at approximately 15 yards. All 10 shots on target.

Rossi rifle with target at 80 yards performed equally well.

I am happy!

Any idea of the velocities?

No idea on the velocities, but the 80 yard shot did seem to take a bit longer to hit the target than the same cartridge loaded with 8.5 grains of Unique.

The 6.7 grains of the 244 is the recommended starting point. Velocity would probably increase by upping the charge a bit.
