Title: Hodgdon 4227
Post by: Froogal on October 02, 2022, 06:23:26 AM
I picked up a 1 pound jug of Hodgdon 4227. Supposedly it is the same thing as IMR 4227, but the Hodgdon powder looks a whole lot different than the IMR. Different color and different texture. Does this seem right? Or did I get took?

Very similar, but not identical. Here's the Hodgdon's page you need.

I guess I should mention that after getting home, I discovered that the jug had already been opened, and even though it appears to be full, I have suspicions that the contents may or may NOT be H4227. The grains appear to be spherical, and some are a tan color similar to Trail Boss, while others are more black.

So for those with more experience than me, do you think it is actually H4227? or is it a blend of whatever dregs were left in a few other powder jugs?

I would never ever even chance using any preowned powder unless I knew the source and it was a unopened sealed jug.

It came from a vendor at the Adel, Iowa gunshow. It was represented as new, but wasn't.

First time for attending that particular show and for sure it was the last time.

I admit I'm cheap, but I would dump that on the flower bed as fertilizer.  :(

Pretty much what I am thinking.

Jusr checked Hodgdon's website and they do not list H4227 anywhere. They only lisr IMR4227.

I know at one time there was both an H4227 and an IMR4227. But to the best of my knowledge H4227 was discontinued several years ago. Lots of discussion about the similarities, differences, and possible formula changes but no concrete data from Hodgdon to back up those opinions.

I agree that if the grains are of different sizes and colors that the only fitting use for that bottle is as fertilizer. That said, you could call Hodgdon and ask them.

That's a dang shame.
