After reading that article I now understand your request to have your bullets unsized.  This is an interesting concept, I assume you do want the bullets lubed.  Have you found this works for you?

For my GAF loads, I don't usually size, either. Just use some of the Lee Liquid Alox. My Krag and Springfield like at least .310, and I don't think my bullets as cast are much bigger, probably not even .311. Only time I size them is to seat gas checks if needed.

Yep, I just pan lube with my Crisco/beeswax.  I've won a couple of Grand Musters using these loads.  (I've found my Krags like a little more powder than 9 grains, but it was an excellent starting load.  My Son also loads this way for his Mosin Nagant, that thing LOVES this stuff. He won last years Regional with it.  I use a 200 grain Lee bullet, drops .311 unsized (Melted chilled shot) in both my Krags and Mosins, as well as a No 5 Enfield.  (Krags run just over .309, the Mosin at .310, the Enfield at .311 ((Maybe. 5 groove rifling hard to measure))  I do gas check, it seems a bit more accurate.  Cheap aluminum ones. Use a .311 Lee sizer to do that.

I shoot with the sights set at 600, and was knocking down our 1/2 scale Blunt style steel targets at 75-100 yds. Bullet mass not velocity, but it does seem to work, and very consistant shot to shot.  Clean too.

Would not mind someone else doing the casting now and then.

That's my problem. I just absolutely don't have the time to cast. Almost don't have the time to reload either, but with the new press I can justify that much time. I've turned out a few thousand .45 Colts the last few weeks. I'll probably start on .45ACP sometime next week.

...And so it shall be stickied.

I applied this same concept this fall to my .45Colt and 45ACP loads. Same primer, same Trailboss charge, same bullet. I don't have a scientific way to test the loads but so far the seem to be working well. It was really nice to be able to change the shell holder, swap out the lock-n-load dies, readjust the actuator for the powder measure and case feeder and start reloading the other cartridge. Change over took maybe twenty minutes.

Uh, no. evidently this is a new development.  :-\ Probably the NSA. Since they can't pass gun control they're going to keep us from reading about them.  ;)

Anybody able to get to surplus rifle?

Can get to the forum, but not the link.  Dammit!  Probably time to take it down.  I'll scrounge around and see if I can find another way in.  Cast Boolit forum has a lot of data on TB now.  They love it over there!

Not so fast DRYDOCK.  I think this is a milsurp forum admin problem.  As I recall I had problems registering and my login today failed. I am awaiting a pwd reset.

I tried every search term(s) I could think of on www.surplusrifle.com and nothing.  Does anyone know the author?

Sounds like maybe their server crashed. If so it may be several days until they get things back running right. If we are never able to get into it again I'll delete the thread.

Fill the case to the base of the bullet.  (No compression!)  Should work fine!

I use a 2.5 cc Lee dipper in the 7.62x54R under a 200 grain Lee bullet.  Donnie won the regional last year with that load.  Use the same dipper in my Krags as well.

Thanks guys. Will give it a try and do some testing.
Is any M91 legal? My Remington and New England Westinghouse look promising for accuracy but were obviously WW1 vintage.

Those are good to go, Dalton. WW1 Moisins are nearly identical to the pre-1900 ones. While the website seems to be having problems, the gist of the article was, they used the same load(9gr) for several milsurp calibers in .30-8mm with all the same powder charge, with basically standard weight for the caliber bullets, with good results. So what you use for a Krag, can be used in .303, 7.62X54,30-06,7.62 Argentine, 8MM Mauser or Lebel, etc. I use 11.5 grains for most everything Military I load, except smaller ones like 6.5 Swede. Also, I just use 9gr in 30-30. Only one so far that didn't work was 8MM Mauser in a '98 Mauser with 225 gr cast, they keyholed. But the same load was great in a Commission rifle.

Awesome Pony. I need to load 30-06 and 7.62x54, so that should be a nice start. I shall commence to play in the loading room this weekend I hope.

The only limitation we place on Mosins is that they must be of the HEx reciever variant, with a straight stock.  Any straight stocked hex reciever Mosin is eligible for the GAF match.  For era of expansion we will also allow any Mosin carbine NOT designed for an attached bayonet, in liu of the rare and unobtainable M1907  (IE the M38, M91/38 or M91/59)

Sweet! Now to see if these 2 new additions to my safe are shooters. I even have a bayonet for it, as long as no crop dusters come by.

Surplus article seems to be gone for good.  As indicated, it simply stated that 9 grains of Trail Boss provided a good starting load in .30 caliber bottleneck rifle cases starting with the .30-30 on up to the .30-06.  Velocitys were in the 1100-1200 fps range, with all sights set on "6" printing close to point of aim at 50 and 100 yards with 150 to 180 grain lead bullets, as cast from Lee molds, no gas checks.

Fill the case to the base of the bullet, weigh the charge and multiply it by .7 that gives you your starting load. This data from: www.imrpowder.com/PDF/Trail-Boss-data.pdf (http://www.imrpowder.com/PDF/Trail-Boss-data.pdf)

It apparently doesn't work well compressed.

I tried it, had no problems with the powder, just that the Arisaka didn't like the bullets I tried. It was the so called "Cruise Missile" mold from Mid South. The flat nose would hang up and not feed from one side of the magazine, I think the left side. So the experiment was put off until I get a different, suitable, mold.

The trailboss data has been moved.

On the Hodgdon website under the resources pull down select Reference Data. Then scroll down to the Reduced Rifle loads.
