Title: Project - Navy C&B's being turned into cartridge guns - Update 11 March
Post by: Pony Racer on January 01, 2006, 09:03:28 AM
Pards I am excited.

I got a good deal on two Navy C&B guns with steel frames and will be buying some R&D kits to convert them with help of a gunsmith friend.

I almost bought OT's but then decided that I like my 5-1/2 RM Cartridge guns - and that I would spend money and get something similar to the gun I shoot best.

Here is to starting the journey!!

11 march update below

Good luck.  You may end up spending more money than just buying a pair of Cimarron Navy Conversions.  You can look to Kirst or R&D.  I believe the R&D will give you a more "authentic" conversion look and feel.  Of course when I called them and talked to them, they mentioned doing the cylanders, adding a punch rod to knock out the empties, relining the barrel.

If your thrill is in the journey than you have picked the right course.  If your thrill is in the destination, than you may want to consider using those Navys to shoot Frontiersman or Pistoleer if you are at an NCOWS match.

PR,  get youself a couple of extra Percussion cylinders and have the best of both worlds. Be careful, however as I started with a 51 Navy and have over $600 in it with conv. cyls, barrel work, Colt backstrap and some of my grips installed. Then converted it to a '61' Navy with a barrel conversion.  It may have been expensive but it sure does shoot and look nice.

Tks pards. I have a gunsmith friend who will be doing the conversions for me - the only thing he is looking to make sure is that he can get the barrel liners for 38spl.

I'd like my ammo between my 51RM's and these to be interchangeable and I already have a nice smokey 38 spl fc load worked up.

I should have the guns by late this week/early next week.

Tks

Poney Racer -

Is this gunsmith friend of yours local?

And, how come we ain't met up yet considering you're just down the road apiece?

Wahoo R&D sells the barrel liner material too.

I am set - will order up the stuff we need for the conversions tomorrow.

In the end the guns and parts is about 850 and then pay my gunsmith friend for his work.

These will be no cheaper than a new pair of guns that are then gone over but really no more expensive either.  They will work with the rig and holsters I already have - so not a bad deal and style points galore.

Update 11 March - Pards and pardettes I am so excited - looks like I maybe shooting my new R&D converted Navies at the VA State match second weekend in April.

The guns with kits and work will run me as much as brand new OT's with action jobs but no more and it has been great to talk with my friend as he gets closer to concluding the project.

If things go really well I may even get a chance to shoot them at a local match two weeks before Round-up - but friend does not want to over promise.

The other great thing is that I do not need new holsters since the guns will have roughly the same dimensions as my 51 RM's - just they will be sporting full length barrels.

wahoooooooo

Pics will come when done

they will be ready for Round-UP in April - and I p[lan on trying them out on side match day and if everything works - they will be shot as my mianmatch guns that weekend.
