Title: Hammered Rossi shotgun
Post by: Tornado on December 14, 2013, 04:34:28 PM
I have a 20ga 26" barreled hammered double barreled shotgun.  Is this a replica of a certain shotgun or did Rossi just create a generic hammered double barrel shotgun?

Generic hammer double.  Ideas from several of the old makers combined into one.  If your using it for CAS, look into Fiocci (spel?) "Trainer"
20Ga ammo for it.  Very light recoil, takes all the knock downs down.

Thanks.
I tried some 20ga Winchester AA reduced recoil in my last match and they worked great, they are probably very similar to the trainers.

You lucky devil.
I want a Rossi in good shape really bad. I mean bad.
My friend found one a few years ago.
They are the best external hammer shotgun in my considerable expert opinion.

I had to check gunbroker every other day for four months to find a 20ga 26" Rossi that the owner didn't think was made of gold.  It is not in perfect shape but it looks pretty good:

I just picked up my, new to me, Rossi Overland in 12GA with 20 inch barrel.

Need to add a good recoil pad and start practicing with it.

Looking at this shotgun closely, I have noticed the hammers do not seem to fall on the firing pins when the trigger is squeezed.  Does it have internal pins?  New to this type of shotgun.

I assume that your gun has rebounding hammers.  They are hitting the firing pins but they bounce back so fast you don't see it.  If you doubt this, take off the barrels and cock it and put your finger over the front of the hole that the firing pin comes out of and then pull the trigger.  Ouch!  :D

Try pushing forward on a hammer when it is down.  It shouldn't move.  Now pull the trigger for that hammer and push forward on it and it will move forward to the firing pin.  That is the way rebounding hammers work.

That makes some sense.  The hammers do what you said.  I'll do the finger test when I get home.

Thanks,
Mike

I now have a band aid on 2 fingers.

Happy camper.

Next I need a recoil pad and some sort of cover to hide the pad.

Mine came with that ugly pad already installed.  I wanted to cut it off but someone did a good job of installing it and I appreciate it's function.  I don't have a picture of it but I did make a leather cover for it.  The LOP is 15" and my lever gun was 13.5", big difference.  So I ended up making one for it too with some filler to get it closer to the shotgun.

There are so many recoil pads out there and so little time.  Any recommendations for pads that fit the Rossi Overland?

At the last match the right hammer was having light strikes about 10% of the time.  I was sharing the shotgun with two other shooters and they had the same issues, all three of us using different brands of shells.  Any thoughts on what could be happening?
Thanks.

What should these go for?  There was one at a recent gunshow here in town.

When I was searching for awhile ago they ran from as low as $225 to mint ones selling for $400, but most were in the $300 to $350 range.
