.308 Cast bullets 180 to 190 grainers
« on: March 20, 2011, 03:44:06 AM »
Any body out there got a source for heavy 180 - 190 grain cast bullets to shoot out to 300 yards from a 30/40 krag or 06.  Moly Cotes would be ideal, but could make due with anything I could push out there at 1800 - 2000 FPS.

You might want to consider something heavier, say around 220 grains if you can find them. The one thing we've sometimes ran into at GAF shoots when using lighter than GI bullet weights is that the shorter bullets can sometimes cause feed problems.

I've never tried lighter bullets, but the 210 grain Lyman bullet I cast works great.  I don't think I've ever had a failure to feed.  It seems accurate, too.  I still can't shoot as fast as Drydock or Charles Isaac, though!

I purchased through Midway a 200 grain round nose gas checked cast bullet that is .309.  It's called True Shot by Oregon Trail and works great in my kraig.  I first tried a 193 grain non gas checked cast bullet .311 from Hunters Supply but it keyholed badly.  The gas check seems to be a must.  The 200 grain bullet is what I used to win the military bolt action long range side match with my kraig at Winter Range where we shot 100, 200 and 300 yards.

I've found most 180 grain bullets will feed just  fine in the Krag, but go no lighter.  lighter bullets will cause feeding problems in the Krag magazine, which is affected by overall length.  165s and especially 150s will give feed problems.

I would agree with Cowtown Scout that gas checks seem to be a "must".  I've tried plain base bullets in the Krag and the 1903 and can't get them to shoot in either one.

Oh yeah!  I don't know why, but it seems nothing under .32 will shoot past 10 feet without a gas check!

I use a Lyman mold 210 gr with a charge of 18.0  5744 powder. at 1429 FPS with no gas check. Shooting at a 18 inch target at a 100 yards I'll get 8 to 9 hits out of ten rounds all the time.
It could be your gun.

I need a group of about two inches.  The only chance I have against Drydock and Charles is to get more hits (and it's really not a very good chance) because I certainly can't run the rifle as fast as they can!

I think about the only chance I stand against those 2 guys is to shoot my trapdoor or my roller...that way I'll be in a different class.  :-[

I'm thinking accuaracy will become more important as we use the 1881 silhouette targets. Those "A" (standing) targets look really skinny at 100 yds.

I'll second that!  The prone targets look pretty small, too.

Thanks guys, think I will get some of the Montana Bullets and the Oregon Trail GCs from Midway and see which the Krag and M95 Browning 06 like best.

May even get some of the .323 CGs from Montana to try in the 07 vintage .32 special 94 winchester I inherited from dad.

Have you slugged the bore on your Krag? Mine likes .310 in a cast, .308 or .309 is too small for it.

Good point that had not been mentioned yet.  The montana bullets actually list a range of diameters that you can order from them.

At the beginning of this thread cpt dan wanted something that would push 1800 – 2000 FPS. I thought OUR (GAF) rules states that "a maximum velocity of no more than 1400 FPS". Shooting a heavier bullet at a higher velocity at a shorter distant I think would do damage to a target, especial if it only 10 yards away (like a SASS shotgun target). What do you think the ricochet would be like; I sure in hell would not want to be that timer or spotter.

The intent is not to shoot at 10 yards, rather more like 100, 200 and 300.

At the 1400 FPS and 10 yard level, dont think I need gas checks.

cpt dan, I was combining two threads into one. Your thread was about 1800-2000 fps; the other was about a SASS group being GAF friendly and allowing the GAF shooters to engage the shotgun targets with either of their weapons, shooters choice. Who in their right mind would shoot a steel target that close 10 to 15 feet away with a Krag or Trapdoor? Not me.

This is true, but even in SASS long range rules state no limits on velocity.  Its a legitimate concern, and clearly the loads cannot be mixed!   :o
