Title: Run, Green Bean Casserole is on the way.
Post by: Delmonico on October 31, 2019, 11:59:57 PM
Yes, I hate green bean casserole and anything involving Tater Tots.🤮

Oh and if it ain't based on green leafy stuff it ain't a salad and if you are going smash the tators peel them first and I want real meat in my mince meat pie, real butter on real homemade rolls and real whipped cream would be nice. >:(

I want a meal I can truly be thankful for.😉

Del, you peel your tater tots? I'm confused . . .

And of course you know that green bean casserole in this country has single-handedly kept the Durkee/French's fried onion rings-in-a-can business alive!

The Lutherns have kept cream of mushroom soup in the current inventory status and the SDAs and their fake meat loaf has done the same for Special K.

Of course the Mormons have their funeral potatoes.

There is a whole book to be written on foods of the potlucks for someone.

I too am a fan of Green Bean Casserole.  I am willing to give anything at least one chance (that may be all it ever gets).  I don't ask anyone to eat something they don't like, just because I do.  (I'd never think of trying to get Del to eat GBC  ::) ;D), besides that leaves that much more for the rest of us!

Thankfully we all like different things, or we'd have a rather short menu to choose from

Roger,
I have a great recipe for a Root Casserole. Make use of those odd parsnips, turnips, rutabagas that are hanging about. Plus finger potatoes, baby carrots, pearl onions . . .
Even better, it can be served at room temperature, so set it aside while cooking the other parts of the feast.

Morning all.

Currently 33 and snowing.

Did my monthly Exodus to Great Falls. Ended up having to come home a different way than normal. 212 was closed because a hay truck overturned, so I took 89 South to Livingston and then 90 East. It added 2 hours, but was a nice drive through the mountains and some snow.

I like green bean casserole too. And candied yams with marshmallows.

Did you know that adding coconut oil to your fried kale makes it easier to scrape into the trash?

Evening all.

I just talked to my mother and learned that a close friend of mine who is a Highway Patrol officer back home was in a head on collision with a log truck.  Responders did CPR, and she actually began breathing on her own. She was life flighted to Redding Ca, and is in ICU.
Her brother is a very close friend of mine as well, but I haven't talked to him yet.

"Crown Roast of Frankfurters" had the soundtrack of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"-theme playing in my head. Da-Da-Dah-Du-DAHH!

We're hosting Thanksgiving for the extended family this year, so all I'm responsible for is the turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy. All the sides are being contributed by others.
Plus bonus, my brother-in-law and I have this tradition of whomever cooks the bird, the other carves that year.
And I plan a big pot of turkey soup for the carcass, afterwards.

In the culinary world turkeys do not have a carcass they have a frame.

42 years later this song about a hapless truck driver with it's odd mix of bluegrass and jazz still makes me laugh.

Her hand went to her bosom
A hush fell on the crew
An acre of Brenda
Lay exposed to view.

Yessir I do. And I fit right in.  ;D

27, wind chill 7 today in Billings. But sun is shining, and most of the ice is gone.

I'm finding more places I hurt myself in my little fall yesterday. So far I'm up to 4 bruised ribs (plus one that's still healing from last month), bruised tailbone, sacrum and hip, pulled muscle in my lower back, stomach and right leg. My left wrist is also painful, though I didn't got it, so I'm not sure why. Sympathy pain, I guess.

Update on the friend of mine that was in the car wreck. It turns out that is was a different friend of mine in the same department.  He's in stable condition, still in ICU. He has multiple broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a concussion, but is expected to make a full recovery. Which is good to hear. He has a wife and 2 children (7 and 1).

We're running onto 3 plus weeks of dry weather, with nothing in the foreseeable future.  We are running overnight lows just around freezing and highs in the mid to high 60's.

At least the cooler temps and low winds are giving the firefighters in California a chance to knock down the worst of the wildfires.  The fact that SPG&E has not kept up the maintenance on it's power line (that led to the destruction of almost the entire town of Paradise.  Their response is to shut off power to users to keep from being blamed again as being the probable cause of a fire.  (I feel for those that have lost property and the ability to get information in critical times due to lack of power).

Found out that this last outbreak caused shutdowns of power to pumping stations that bring gas and diesel fuel to Reno.  Nice to know that the California bureaucracy can influence a lot of people outside of their jurisdiction.  And I thought leaving would rid myself of California Government.

Oh well, I'll get off my soapbox (high horse), and just enjoy the sunny skies and nice temps we're having!

Actually slept most the night, got up and cleaned a disaster kitchen, supper was good, friend left 15 pounds of ribs with me back in September and then I got sick, didn't feel like doing them and didn't want to get him sick in case it was catching.

Actually he came over the see and play with Little Brown Dog.😉

Little Brown Dog was naughty Thursday, snuck in and snuck back outside with a half slab of ribs.😖  it's ok, we had plenty, DJ laughed and said he's too cute to be mad at for long.

Smoked em with oak for a couple hours, put on a rub and slow cooked them in the roaster, house smelled awsome, Little Brown Dog  kept trying to tell me they were done.😂

I am so glad we didn't wait a while to get another dog and so glad I was on FB that night and so glad I didn't say no when the one we thought was black was brown, were sure though we got the same one that looked black and was a male.  Norton said he got the darkest one.  Couldn't turn back at that point, Rita had already named him.

Because I was sick and getting certain people together we are not doing Rowdy's ashes till spring.  Moved the can to the closet yesterday, Little Brown Dog  licked the dust out of my etes.

Still laid up. I've had bruised ribs before, but not seven of them at once. Makes sneezing an adventure. Also, I didn't know the tailbone was involved in the breathing process. But it definitely let's me know that it is.

Russ, those Californians just mess with everyone.   ::). On a different note, there's a chance I'll end up in your neighborhood in the next couple years. The ANG unit there is going to have an opening for a pilot right about the time I'll be looking for a pilot position. So I plan on putting in an application.

Del, you gotta keep an eye on those little food-converters with tails. Mine got on the counter once and ate an entire stick of butter out of the dish.

Took care of those chores yesterday.  I brought all the stuff into the garage from the patio, and the wife was in charge of stuffing everything onto the shelves.  She has a system of some sort as to where everything goes, so if I put it away I'd probably fit more in there, but then we'd never find it again next spring.

Seemed a little strange to be packing this stuff away when the temp was about 70.  But better that than waiting till the snow was blowing, winds gusting and the temp near zero.

Slim, I made my bullet trap out of an old steel barrel with one end open. Filled it full of the landscape mulch made out of shredded tires that I purchased at Lowe's. Put a self sealing rubber membrane over the open end after placing the mulch inside. My membrane was some material lining a box that some delicate materials came in. When all of it is gone I am going to try rubber mat for the floor that you can get at Harbor Freight. Built a stand for the barrel out of two by fours so it would lie on it's side about chest high. Placed target stand in front of the open end with paper target attached. Gave  $15.00 for the barrel and about $100.00 for enough mulch to fill barrel. Shot it with lots of different cowboy calibers using lead bullets. Haven't had one to penetrate completely through yet! Have also tried handguns in 9mm, 45 acp, 38 & 357 with jacketed with no problems. Barrel is pretty heavy when full of the mulch. I use the front end loader on the tractor for setting it on and off the stand. Shoot it till the membrane has a big enough hole where the mulch starts to fall out. Take it down, sift through mulch to retrieve lead bullets so they can be melted down for recasting, fill it back up, place new membrane and ready to go again. Been using for three years with no problems.  Keep a tarp over it when not in use. Have to be careful when removing tarp in summer time, wasps like to build under it!

I was thinking more of a metal box similar to the rimfire bullet traps.

Slim,  Built something similar to that many years ago. May be great for small caliber but I was using far larger than .22 and got a lot of splatter.  Tried putting sand in the bottom to catch the projectile but still didn't stop the splatter from the lead bullet contacting the back deflector. I guess it depends a lot on what you are firing into the trap.
On the trap that I use the bullets have very little deformation. I wash them and then they go back into the pot to be recast into new bullets. The last time I cleaned it out I recovered over 12 pounds of lead.
Hope you find one that works well for you.

Rowdy won't mind  ;D

last Sunday, we lost  Cody (Bufallo Bill Cody) to sudden Kidney failure. He had diabetes and CKD ( chronic Kidney Disease) for about 3 years.
both were under control with insulin shots twice daily and other meds. He was active and comfortable right up until friday night (day of the the dead).
He Started acting very poorly late Saturday night, we didn;t get much sleep, and ran him into the Emergency Vet Sunday morning.
Turns out his kidneys failed completly, blood numbers were off the chart. Nothing we could have done. I truly think he decided his work was done,
and so his kidneys just quit.

There was nothing left to be done but to grant him "grace" and assist him to pass comfortably.

I built him a nice little box, but could not bury him until today.
We Just now finished burying him, with his favorite toys, tobacco and sage, and an honor song.

Buried him right between his best buddy Zorro, and their mentor Groucho.

it never gets any easier.

Hey Kid, hope to get a chance to see ya sometime in the future.
When I first moved here the 152nd was a photo reconnaissance unit flying  RF-4C aircraft.  Now it is an airlift wing flying C-130H's.  It never seems like I'm truly home until the plane taxis passed the High Rollers Herc's on it's way to the terminal.

They do a lot with MAFFS (Modular Aerial Fire Fighting System) these days too. One of 4 units that do, hence my interest. There was talk of my unit getting into that, but the funding didn't materialize, so we're still just doing airlift and disaster releif.  Half the unit just got back from a deployment to Afghanistan moving equipment around the desert.

Slim, I just use a stack of 4-5 old tires, filled with sand. Every so often you have to take it apart and replace the one or two middle tires, they actually get shot in two! But of course, that's not too moveable, without a bunch of shovel work.

I have not had time to shoot it yet just completed it Wednesday

the design is such that  it will set on level ground so any frag will not be a issue downward. There is a steel disk welded on the top should defect any lead dust trying to go upward. Most fragments should collect in the pipe

Once I've tested I can adjust  I plan to set it up this weekend for the test run

Still need to find a good photo program, My old one on disc won't download, kids said it probably is too obsolete.

Was looking at some last night,, they all seemed to brag about the filters they had being easier than the old ones you had to set yourself, well I don't want an idiot one, the one with the computer does all that, none said anything about fixing, restoring and cloning.

Looking forward to seeing how well your trap works, M-2. In this video, his seems to work fine for lead bullet loads, but it had a bit of a problem with .223. Also, it appears to pretty much "powder" the lead, instead of leaving bigger chunks.

https://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=ymyy-t-999&p=how+to+build+a+bullet+trap&guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuY2FzY2l0eS5jb20vZm9ydW1oYWxsL2luZGV4LnBocC90b3BpYyw2MzIxOC5tc2c3NDkyODUvYm9hcmRzZWVuLmh0bWw&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAMLD_a0hCaHtLa0uMPCV5sNVWug2CwIUIHDMQ67oYOlZdJo4lQmZvFcGN_Oeq4O6Wzl-Wa-LgvFcPi1rF3WeRNFeo9ng3H3jU7BOISKaecApdSLUzLigruHiNWaN1j8dyy5BSKJi2huGwcH1kf_HFxjOQVW9S5wP3OYMhBD01abu#action=view&id=7&vid=0758452b3eb1ea83d7041deeb733ef91

Thanks for the video I had not seen that particular one,

I will comment on it a bit though... I have No intention of using Jacketed bullets or for that matter high velocity .223 etc. on my trap.

Though his works well with pistol & lead , it also appears to be of lighter streel, Both visually in that it was moved & knocked down by his 12 Gauge.

I wont be using a shotgun either , The #7 shot spread would be greater than the mouth of The 2 foot square face in my design

I'm confident my 3/8 thick wall plate and A500 pipe @156 Lbs. will contain revolver & pistol lead rounds 22 - 45 ACP.,  I wont use any magnum either

I also hope it will contain my hand loaded Lead 165 grain  & Trail boss 30/06  & 30/40 195 grain  Krag that are stepping out under 1350 FPS max. that will be determined
NO Factory load jacketed 30 Cal. will be attempted

It should contain those bullets just fine. I've been shooting a lot of jacketed rifle rounds lately, so I'll stick with my "sand trap". But it appears that I'll need to take it apart and "Mine" it out, the center tire is getting in pretty bad shape. If I take it apart now I can just turn it, If I wait too long it will be shot in two and I'll need to replace it.

I know it will handle the 22- 45 ACP just fine I shot the same plate in some fabricated  SASS type targets I made years ago

Pistol & pistol caliber rifles bullets cause no damage in 10 years ?. I not quite so sure about the 30/06 but since it 165 Grain lead and 80% trail boss

Went out and burned some powder today. My girlfriend bought me a 30 round magazine for my Beretta, so we had to go test it.  It works well.  I have it loaded up with 30 rounds of Winchester 147 grain JHP and squirreled away in my "stuff just got interesting" bag that I keep in my truck.  I also tested a 10 round mag in my 32. Thanks Roo, OK when I got there they told me that before I left a heart Dr would look over the results and decide if I got to go home or not.  They let me go home and will have to wait now for my Dr office to call me next week.  Guessing I'm not going to drop dead this weekend, they did some extra testing that wasn't in the original plan so my guess they found something but not real bad.  Sit and wait some more.

Decided to just sit and take it easy and not worry, house needs work before Thanksgiving, I'm keeping normal things like dishes and laundry up, Rita of course has trouble walking like it has been for about 10 years so the niece is coming over to help, she does Thanksgiving at our house till she gets one.  We will feel bad having to have the help this year, she will not mind and say so, everything will be fine and I don't have to deal with any Black Friday people so life is good.

Getting ready for "At Home" Thanksgiving dinner.  This one is for friends here in town.  The whole 9 yards including a 20 lb turkey and, yes, green bean casserole.  Turkey's on the Weber and doing well.  That's my part of dinner prep.  She who gets to cook on Holidays is taking care of the rest.  She loves GB casserole!

Then come Tuesday we head to Oregon and start all over again on Thursday.  Talk about a double dose of Turkey induced nap times.

Glad you're feeling better Del.  Hope this talk of GBC doesn't cause a relapse.  ;D ::)

If you go to the trouble of picking your mushrooms in the woods, soak them in badger urine for 24 hours before mashing and chopping to add to your cream base, (skimmed right out of the pail from the milch cow), snapping fresh green beans, then frying up to a crisp fresh onion shavings, - it can require several people a considerable amount of time.

Most of that spent collecting enough urine.

But bragging rights over the savory results are well worth the effort.

Afternoon all.

I have thoroughly been immersed in a case of the kruds. Which makes my cooking for the upcoming holiday problematic.

I make my own stuffing out of sweet cornbread and pork sausage. And yes, it's stuffing because it goes in the bird. If it we're cooked outside it would be dressing.  I also will make candied yams, and mashed potatoes. The pumpkin pie will be from canned pumpkin puree, but I'll season it myself.
And all this will be washed down with local apple cider from 100 year old trees. (And maybe a splash of Wild Turkey 101).

Evening all.

I took my Thanksgiving break a day early. Stayed home and rested. This is one of the worst colds I've ever had, so I'm just trying to not die.

I made a batch of elderberry syrup yesterday. Had to use dried berries from Natural Grocers. I had never been in one of those establishments until yesterday. And I probably won't a second time in the future. Very weird music inside, and a well-to-do older lady gave me a very disappointed glare when I had to roll down the window in my old truck to open the door from the outside. Not that people's opinions about me are terribly troubling, I just don't care to associate with that crowd.

Also, someone backed into my truck in the parking lot with a Suburbitank. Backup cameras don't work if you don't use them. Fortunately, my old piece of steel only got a scuff on my shiny bumper.

I'm starting to sound like a grumpy old man here.  ::)

Got a call from Drs office about 12:10 yesterday wanting to know if I could make a 12:45 appointment at the heart institute, left Rita to deal with the lunch stuff and made it.

Things are not good but not that bad, blood flow through heart is reduced so it's working harder, O2 is very good though.  Cath next Wednesday, if it's just a minor blockage they toss in a couple stents.

Got to pick up meds this morning, was snowing and last days of sales at grocery store I wasn't going to fight that crowd to get to their pharmacy, besides I was just plain tired.

In reading through this, I am glad you guys do not like the offal, more for me.   Love Haggis too.  Ate it every day I was in Scotland, all 21 days.   Had black pudding too.  Was diagnosed with a potato allergy about 32 years ago, so I mostly avoid them.   Have definitely learned to appreciate turnips, parsnips and rutabagas, mixing in yucca as I experiment works too.  To me one of the finest meals is a nice beef liver grilled over wood coals with some sauteed onions and a nice red wine (it would be Chianti in my house, but thought the mention a bit trite after Hannibal so aptly paired them).

Do agree that Velveeta is an abomination and not a big fan of GB casserole.  I like my green beans to be al dente, not mushy.

Prayers up for Delmonico.

Slim: Would that be Marshfield , Missouri? If so, open the window and say "hey!" as you're going by the 145 exit, if you use I-44.

Green Bean Casserole is already made for the Great Feast. Turkey just went in the oven. Last night-pies. There's THREE of them, and only 4 of us! Two Sweet Tater, one (store bought) pumpkin. Reason for Sweet tater-we grew a bunch of them in the garden last year. Reason for (store bought) punkin, Wife thought we should have some punkin, and they failed in the garden last summer. Just a few small ones made it, and NO winter squash at all. But we planted 3 hills of decorative mini gourds, and, we got hundreds of the little suckers. Sold a bunch at the farmers market, gave some away, bunch of them still sitting around being decorative.

Anyway, S.Tater pies were scratch, I made the crust, wife filling and bakes them. Del will be proud that for the first time I used Lard instead of Crisco, haven't tasted it yet, but I have to say it was the EASIEST pie crust dough to work with I've ever made.

I'm back, didn't go anywhere, ain't left the house.   There was a mad furniture rearranging Wednesday, with me watching BIL and Niece, Lexie is staying with us for a while and my desktop is in the dining room again and I just got it set back up, Lexie carried the stuff out for me.  Anyway had to change the password to get logged in on it and then forgot it and haven't felt like changing it again so I could use the tablet.  I will before Wednesday.

Just eating leftovers, taking naps and doing very little, they told me to take it very easy till I find out exactly what's up.  Was talking to Pitspiter last night, good thing I didn't have a heart attack up there.  Thought the problems were something different I had problems with 4 years ago.  Was looking at photos from September and someone took this one, I remember thinking I had that acid reflux and sat down for a bit, I look like crap.
