Hello,
Just picked up my first Spencer, not in great condition, however I love it! There a 2 pressing questions I ha e and any help would be appreciated.
1)Serial # 21275. Any i fo would be great.
2)So the gun has NO tubular magazine and the stock literally has no access for one either. After market stock? conversion???

Do you have a carbine or rifle? Need to see photos of your Spencer. If you can't do this, send them to me at fsgrand2@fairpoint.net, especially of the stock and receiver area top, bottom, and sides.
I will be adding your username to the SSS membership list. I'll check on your serial #.

Am very interested to know how the butt stock is held in place without outer tube and its tension nut.

Closest serial # to your 21275 that I found in my SRS research books is serial # 21252, next serial # listed is 21692 - both of these Spencer Carbines were issued to Company D, 5th New York Volunteer Cavalry on April 22, 1864. Hard to say if your Spencer (carbine or rifle??) went to this same unit because of the gap in serial #s listed.
On the other hand, your Spencer may have been included as part of a state purchase of Spencer firearms and were sent to a different unit, in that case those serial #s were never recorded or appear on any list.
Without seeing any photos and speculating on your Spencer, it may have been modified after the Civil War and made into a single shot shooter, especially if the stock has been completely replaced. Just speculating, though, still want to see your photos.
I have a thread/post on SSS on HOW TO TAKE GREAT PHOTOS of your Spencer. Just try to use daylight and not artificial lighting to photograph your Spencer.

Is it smooth bore ? I have seen one Spencer that had been so modified to shoot .410 shot

It is a Carbine.
As for the bore, it is rifled.
Thanks so much for the quick responses. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to vintage guns, however I cannot tell you how blown away and excited I am to have this.

See if the serial #s match. There is one at the top of the receiver, and there should be a second serial # on the underside of the barrel covered over by the forearm. You will need to remove the forearm to see it. See if the numbers match.
