Title: 5th and 6th Holsters (Schofield) Now With Photos Of Complete Rig reply 14
Post by: Rube Burrows on September 13, 2020, 05:28:13 PM
Decided to make a pair of holsters for my Schofields. These are my 5th and 6th holsters and I am most proud of these. No, they are not perfect but they are a step in the right direction for me. I tried my hand at the carving and though I would not get the swivel knife to work right and I did not have all of the proper tools for correct carving I still feel it turned out well enough and I am super happy with them.

I tried Saddle Lac for the top cote and its too glossy for my taste so I will try to dull the finish down some later.

The guns fit in there really nicely but I made my stitch line turn into the holster at the top and on this pattern I should not have done that. All in all though I am happy and still learning.

Comments and constructive criticism welcome.

Those look good. You're really moving forward with your work.

I personally like to put a slight taper to the holster so the tip isn't quite as wide. That's only preference, though, not good or bad.

One thing that will make your tooling more dynamic is to make decorative accent cuts with the swivel knife as the last tooling step. Here's a page that shows the basic steps in order. https://www.realeather.com/projects-and-ideas/Article/49/Basic-Tooling-Steps (https://www.realeather.com/projects-and-ideas/Article/49/Basic-Tooling-Steps) Scroll down and compare steps 8 and 9 to see the difference.

Looking frorward to #'s 7 & 8!  :D

I'd be proud as a new Dad if I made those.

Nice work Rube.

Thanks for the link. I need lots of practice on the tooling and carving.
As for the taper.... This pattern called for a toe plug but I sewed it closed rather than put the toe plug in. Prob. should have just left it open though.

Those look amazing, nice work. They look glossy now, but that fades with time, especially if they spend a lot of time outside.

Yeah, I was trying out Saddle Lac and it has a higher gloss than I want. I want to either dull it down or like you said, hopefully it will loose some of that with use.

Like I said, there's nothing wrong with your design. Just keep making these cool holsters. You have a good feel for leather work. This time you stitched the toe closed. Keep trying new things. That's what makes leather work interesting. In no time you'll have your patterns exactly where you like them.

Will do. I have yet to make a belt so that will be my next project. I want a belt for these holsters. I found a buckle that I think will work. Now I just need to cut the strips and see what I can do.

Well I have now completed a whole rig now. This is the first full rig I have made. I am very pleased with the way it turned out and my Schofields now have a place to ride comfortably.

Beautiful! This Rig has a "professional" look to it. When someone asks you "where did you buy that Rig". You can proudly answer "I made it myself".

Just a thought, if you want a finish with less of a gloss, you might want to try Skidmore's Leather Creme for the final finish.  www.skidmores.com

Yeah! Good job on that rig. Ghormley's Wheat and Rosebuds buckle is a nice touch. Well done.  :D

Thanks. I def do want something without so much gloss. I went ahead and did the belt with the Saddle Lac also since I done the holsters already and the difference was noticeable.

Thanks for the comments also.

Thank you. I have two of these buckles on other rigs that were made for me in 2008 by a member here. I robbed one of those from a rig that don't get any use (too small). I have always loved those buckles.

Grey Ghost and I have to say that it was such a simple process. I filled out the form and paid Friday and later that day he text me and emailed me a copy of the design to okay it. I okayed it and he said it will ship that same day. I got it on Monday.

Where do you get the small longer rounded rectangular shaped ones ? Wouldn't mind having one for smaller projects.

You may want to see if Grey Ghost can make one for you. I got mine from Infinity Stamps. I made a line drawing (.jpg) of it and emailed it to them. Perhaps Grey Ghost will make one from your artwork. You can also check with Steelstamps.com. Both Infinity and Steelstamps are steel. I expect mine will last a lifetime. You'll pay more for steel than for Delrin, though.

 :)  Actually   ;)

I would suggest shipping the whole rig off to ME.  I would gladly perform the "ooh" and "aah" testing for, oh say three matches a month for maybe two or three years to get you a really good sampling   ::)

It would probably be beneficial if you included the Schofields too   8)

Always happy to be of service   ;D

While that is a wonderful offer and I truly appreciate you trying to help me out like that, I'm going to have to keep them and try them out myself.  ;D
