100yrds 8in Steel Plate

From today (9/2) 20 grains 5744 350 grain 2% tin RCBS-82309, 100yrd off hand.  Chiappia 56-50 Spencer rifle.

5 Shot group.  On the fifth shot knocked it not OFF the hook, but up the hook and down the pole!  This was the second time today!

If you can would you indicate the measurements on the cartridge (OAL), and the brass casing, and btw what brass are you using?

Any extraction or feeding problems?  100 yards?  Nice shooting

Wow - that's great!  How does that load compare to 45gr of BP?  Would be interested in more details of your load.

Thanks for the kind words guys.  Getting ready for the TN state match.

Two Flints - my OAL is 1.585 - my Chiappia Spencer is VERY sensitive to OAL - more so than most Spencers I believe.  If I load over 1.595 I have feeding problems.  If I load under 1.55 I have feeding problems.  At 1.585 my my lever works like butter, but I have spent a LOT of time working on this gun.  I use starline brass.

ndmchf - My club's chrono clocked 20 gr of 5744 at 940fps.  I believe that load is under 14,000 CUP, but don't have my loading book on me now.  I use a heavy crimp and put a cardboard wad over the load, filling the airspace between wad and the bullet with TP.  This is makes sure the 5744 is up against the primer and is not loose.  Not sure how this stacks up to 45 grains of BP.  At the same sight setting when I use BP I usually use 35gr of 3F if this helps.

Shooting this load is pleasant - a nice crisp bang almost no recoil.  Not mushy like the trailboss I use to use.

Thanks PvtGreg.  That seems like a resonable load.  Have you tried it in an orignal Spencer or only the Armisport?  I'm not sure if I want to use smokeless in my original rifle or not.  I have to admit being a little leary of it.

ndnchf - I wouldn't use anything but BP in yours.  The 1871 is a rare beast and I am more than a little envious of you I admit.

so, what is your Bullet Alloy?
   I'm very perturbed over my ArmiSport Spencer Rifle's 1-20" Twist, but I'd hate to send it out to
be sleeved for a 1-48" @ $200 (?) to rectify it...

350 grain 2% tin RCBS-82309 from Montana Bullets.  My twist is 1 in 22, not one in 20.  I have had this measured by two gunsmiths.

If you do get it re-sleeved please keep us informed on how it goes.
