Galloway,,that is a question I had...about barrel length ....

Did Smith and Wesson offer the model 3 in various barrel lengths ?  Or, was this 'Jesse James' Smith maybe cut back ?

Thanks pards,

The various Smith & Wesson Model 3's were offered in several barrel lengths.

8" (standard), 7", 6 1/2", 6 1/4", 6", 5 1/2" and 5".

Many were cut down from their longer lengths - most notably, the surplus Schofields sold to outfits like Schuyler Hartley and Graham and to Wells Fargo.

They were reportedly used by Frank James (s/n's 3444 & 5476), Jesse James (s/n 366), Cole Younger (s/n 2341), Bill Tighlman and Frank McLowery - among many others.

St. George, much oblidge sir. I suspected as much, from looking at the originals pictured on antique brokers and other images of the old west.

I got my Smith in a  trade,,,parted with a fine flintlock in the deal,,,but,,,I have to say,,after the initial awkwardness ,,,or,,just.... difference in feel,,,iv really got to a'likin' this Schofield. The fact that it is an excellent shooter doesnt hurt my feelin's any either.

I'd like to see a reproduction to compare to the Smith,,,as,,,i'm somewhat takin' with the idea of a mid-length barrel length myself. The Uberti looks , in the picture, all but identical to the real Smith. But, I havent seen the Uberti Schofiield up close and personal like yet.

Very nice Schofield indeed.

The neat thing about our comtempary made revolvers,,,,use and age just makes'um look better.

Is that 4.5 an original,,,? Sure has a good look to it if not.

Thanks

Yeah, it's original. And it looks like the barrel was shortened a while ago too.

Very interesting posting Marshall!

What can you tell us about where the gun is displayed, and how it is documented to Jesse?

Thanks - Jim
