My Good wildman

Starline and hornady recommned .308 jacketed, whilst the original spec ca 1896 was
Bullet diameter: 7.86 mm (0.309 in)

Some folks have good luck ( see castboolets) using cast .30 carbine bullets if they are short enough
To fit the case without going too deeply.

Gonna have to cast some up and see.
I will Prolly pull the bullets on the old tokarev loads...

Major, thats another option for you, go “old school make-do” and pick up some tokarev 7.63
Then pull the bullets and reload...

Thanks Prof...I considered that  and I looked at that option,  even 90 Grain 32/20 and size to .309

But Longwalker gave me a heads up https://www.pennbullets.com/30/3090rnbb.html

I have actually ordered from Penn before and place a order for the above

My test loads of  the 90 grain  209 Dia. bullet from Penn resulted in noting some keyholing.
I also noticed keyholing with factory Fiocchi FMJ's...

After slugging my Mauser barrel,  I call Robert @ Penn Bullets  ( I had some 180 Grain .311 30 Cal. on order for my 30-06 anyway )
He will size a new batch of 90 grain  30 Mauser to .311 and Hi-tech coat and send them down...

             RIGHT > Fiocchi  88 grain .309 FMJ

Yers ago  (@1986) I had a commercial 1930 Mauser 1896 that I re-barreled. Had a shoulder stock/holster for it.  Used to bust pop cans at 50-75 yards regularly and even at 100 yards 50-75% of the time with the stock and a good rest.  Even had some European soft point ammo for it!  Sadly let that one get away.
