Sounds interesting 45 Dragoon/Mike. Hope it works out for ya. I have a ROA, fine shooter and all, but my 2nd Model Dragoon 44 (with full length barrel  ;D) is still and always be my favorite percussion hogleg (Richards II fav conversion style, also full length barrel  ;D). Never cared for the R&D/Taylors style where you have to take cylinder out to load, after firing, remove the cylinder, reload, fire, take cylinder out, reload, etc, etc. PITA as far as I'm concerned, I don't care how easy it is to finger push the barrel wedge out  ;D. Of course the Ruger OA ya don't have to push any wedge out, but still be a pain having to break down every time.

Was interested in the Kirst for a while, possibly buying several, one for one of my Dragoons and one for a Uberti 1860 Army or a Pietta 1851 44 caliber, but the price to convert for cylinder and ejector rod in my estimation was to much. If ya shop right ya can get a Uberti Open Top or one of the conversion models for not much more than the price of a conversion cylinder/ejector rod and ya don't have to do any fitting. I bought my last Uberti 44 Colt Open Top (new) for the price of a Kirst cylinder and ejector rod. Ya I know, the Uberti's need some TLC in the arbor fit department and maybe some attention to other parts  ;D. As far as that is concerned, what modern, factory new firearms don't anymore. The firearm producers aren't putting out Pythons or old style H frame Model 27's anymore. Anywhooo (where's Rifle these days-miss his posts), 45 Dragoon, your endeavor for ROA's sounds interesting, will have to take a look/see if you market them. Endeavor to Persevere!
Funny you should mention Pythons...https://www.colt.com/series/PYTHON_SERIES

Would you believe I've ended up with 3 Ruger Old Army's with 7-1/2" barrels and fixed sights?!  ;D Two in stainless steel and one blued.

I've had the stainless ones engraved by Aspen Filly, all 3 tuned and lowered hammers installed.  Now what's really fun is to use them for Frontiersman Gunfighter!  ;D ;D  They're an absolute natural for that.

I shoot a brace of ROAs from time to time when the urge to make big booms, flames and smoke moves me.  Also, I have sold several custom bullet molds for the modified ROAs that were rebuilt to .50 Caliber.  The cylinders would be Five shot.

Also, I have Kirst Konverter cylinders for my own brace of ROAs chambered in 45 Colt.  It is an unpublished fact that rigs like mine have been proof fired with 454 Casull pressure loads.  Neither the ROAs or the Kirst Konverter cylinders were even phased.

Now, I'm not selling anything here, but if you want something more robust than a Walker 47 replica,  One already exists.  So, for those of you that want plenty of power in a black powder revolver, look no further.

Enjoy the big booms!

So you are sayin you've tried 60gs of 3f in your ROA's? I couldn't get that much in mine, but I could in my Walkers.

I shoot Frontier Cartridge Gun Fighter.  A brace of Walkers would tax my wrists and arms.  The ROAs handle the heavy loads easily.  Now, If I wanted to outpace the Walkers I could load up some 45 Colt brass with a stout load of smokeyless shit and push 1300 fps with 250 grain bullets.  But, what would be the charm?

I have somewhat of an update,  I designed a gated conversion for the ROA a while back. Since then, life and business has been front and center. Last month though, I found a company that may produce my conversion. The obvious chamberings would be a 45acp and a 45C  (which would allow anything off the shelf and "Ruger only" loads). There is also a possibility of a 5 shot version in 454 Casull !
This is a "drop in" style of gated conversion along the lines of the Kirst gated conversions which means (normally) no changes to the revolver (internally) .  .  .  even the 5 shot version.  You'll be able to use it as a "drop cylinder" for ROA's that you don't want to open the recoil shield.
Another plus is the possibility of having some new "cones" ("nipples"!!) produced by the same company. I designed these as well and the benefit is more power with the same powder charge you're using now.  So, there ya go .  .  . all updated and stuff!!

Mike

Merry Christmas and Happy new Year!

Talking about gated conversion for ROA, from I could see on mine, loading 45 Colt or 45 ACP wouldn't work without removing cylinder from the frame. Existing opening on ROA shield is just not large enough to load cartridges.

Other possibility is to enlarge opening on the shield, but in that case we talking about major modification that should be done on milling machine. Please correct me if I missed something.

As for 454 in ROA, my apology for skepticism, but I do not see the point. Even SAAMI 45 Colt will barely fit in ROA conversion cylinder. On top of that, I am not sure that ROA grip is right choice for such heavy recoiling cartridge.

Exactly!! That's why all the secrecy!! Lol!  You know, patents and all that kinda stuff.  I will say, I have spoken with a major production CO. and  .  .  .  stuff is happening but if the "new Gov. pans out" , well, it may be all for naught. Remember, you can vote yourself into socialism, but you have to shoot your way out of it, elections do have consequences!!
