I hear so many people poopoo the rivets saying they will scratch the gun but they won't if they are set down below the surface of the leather.

No, This is the way I make them. I have eliminated the rivet before, though.

That is the way I make them also minus the rivet. I have used rivets before but usually don't.

I do agree with above though. If set deep enough they should not be a problem for the gun.

When I use a rivet, I make sure it's set below the surface. I also position it so it's below the throat end of the cylinder so it won't even touch the gun anyway.

I use a flat round headed punch, and with my dampen leather indent the spot I will be putting the rivet, it works fine for me, no scratching at all of gun parts , it gets the rivet below the surface...

That's a good idea, TW. I'll give that a try next time I do one.

I made what I guess you can call an anvil to position the leather on when setting the rivet. All it is is a piece of oak board with a hole drilled in it and a rivet driven in the hole so the rivet sets above the surface of the board. I carefully position the rivet over the rivet in the board when setting so it recesses the rivet pretty deep into the holster body so no chance it could touch the gun.

This is what Chuck Burrows said way back:

"IMO get one of Bob Douglas' 3 piece sets - they are not cheap, but they make the most beautifully-set rivets you'll ever see....look like the rivets on Levi's with that nicely rounded head...."

I took his advice and got that set. They are excellent. The rivets will never scratch gunmetal.

Finished up my rig for the 72 Open Tops.

Love the way the holsters turned out and how they fit.

Had a few belt blanks that I cut a while back out of some 9 oz leather. The belts from that leather are super comfortable but they are pretty flimsy. I will prob. make another belt. I was mainly just wanting to use up those blanks that I cut for myself but I will double the last two that I have.

Here are a few pics.
