Webley Fosbery in the Not so Old West? One can wonder.....
« on: October 23, 2020, 01:18:00 PM »
Recently acquired grail gun purchased after selling a good number of my collection.  I posted these over in another Webley topic but here might be a more appropriate location.  I have never seen a photo of one on the frontier (post 1902).  Has anyone else?  Here is my interpretation.  I cannot believe that I had a holster that fits perfectly!

I don't recall seeing an earlier photo. Nice looking gun you have there.

Their production ran from 1901-1924 - the Old West was long gone by that time.

If I remember, the cut-off date for SASS/NCOWS is 1899, but the GAF does different eras and militaries that would include the piece.

The holster could be contemporary to the time of issue - retaining straps and glove fastener snaps became quite popular in the 1920s.

It would only qualify in the Expansion Era, but we'd love to see it there!

Guy brought one to a GAF match in Illinois a few years back, and used it in an expansion stage.  He also let other folks shoot it.  Weirdest recoil impulse I've ever felt, but so damn cool!

Thank you for the responses.  I know the history of the Webley Fosbery and what it dates to.  While the Wild West was "officially" over by 1900.  I think there were a lot of areas in the west where there were pockets that were still pretty wild.  For example, the Arizona Rangers weren't created to combat lawlessness in Arizona until 1901.  Also, my grandfather carried a Colt in his waist band (with the loading gate flipped out) and had a Winchester in his truck on his property in southern Arizona well into the 1950s that he said were for "varmints."
As far as shooting the Fosbery in a sanctioned match, given the value of this puppy, I will need to think long and hard about it.

The Old West was gone, but the Wild West still existed!  There ia a possibility (remote, maybe, but possible!) that some enterprising soul may have brought one back and used it in the late teens, early twenties in what was still somewhat wild territory.  It's interesting to contemplate!

I’m sure that proper British gentleman and ex British soldiers immigrated to America along with the huddled masses from Europe so it would be logical that they would bring firearms that they were familiar with. Imo Webleys and .455 ammo were likely brought over. The Fosbery though had evolved into a target revolver? after failing as a military sidearm. The dirt and mud of the trenches was too much for it [along with the Canadian Ross]. I wouldn’t think many if any Webley Fosberys made the trip in somebody’s kit but you know anything is possible. Mine is a target model. Just my .02.
