NCOWS / Sad News for Our NCOWS Family
« Last post by SgtRickHenry on March 12, 2024, 07:17:58 AM »
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the recent passing of SCOWS Deputy Marshal Richard Boyd aka MoonShine, on January 28, 2024. Moonshine was a true cowboy, a good friend, and a valued member of our posse, the South Carolina Old West Shootists, always ready to lend a hand in any way he could.  That spirit helped in sustaining the well-being and growth of SCOWS, and although he will be dearly missed, his contributions will be just as dearly remembered.

MoonShine, as we all knew him, was a Life Member of NCOWS and an NCOWS Senator.  He spent a lot of time at our range, honing his shooting skills and helping along new shooters.  MoonShine participated in all of our matches and events, including the NCOWS Conventions and National Match, often traveling long distances to do so.  MoonShine handled all of the setups for our posse matches, he brought the cooler with ice and the cold drinks we all enjoyed, and was generally the first to volunteer when help was needed.  MoonShine leaves a void that will be hard to fill.

As a token of our respect for Moonshine, the posse is planning to send our condolences to his widow, Wilma, in the very near future. If any of you would like to share a personal sentiment to Wilma, please send an e-mail to our Posse Secretary, Youghiogheny Kid (aka Y-Kid / Kevin Krist) at kevin_krist@yahoo.com within the next few days, and we will be sure to include it in the card.

SCOWS is also planning to include a tribute to Moonshine as part of our annual Michael "Capt.JEB Forrest" Fischer Memorial Match on the last Saturday in June, to which Wilma and Moonshine’s family will be invited.

As we bid farewell to Moonshine as he rides off into the sunset, I share the following quote, whose exact origin may be lost, but whose essence remains true: “In heaven, there will always be a place for cowboys, riding through the clouds, forever young.”

you might think moose.   Look at Moscow Fur and Hide, they have pieces and will keep an eye out for sizes if you tell them what you are looking for.  I always had good service from there.

My Good Monsiuer Logan

Your best bet is to go straight to “elk country” and buy an entire rac, either collected shed or someone who is willing to selll the rack after harvesting the animal. I “used to” find full and half racks for sale at the cool old stores and “trading oosts” in any of the mountains or Black hills, but not much in touristy places. Or you can particpipate in the Grand Teton Elk Antler sale/auction every year by the local boy scouts. But one must be prepared to bid against crazy money….

Good luck

@Coffinmaker
Thanks, I just saw the reply over at "clones". I think, together we are getting at the root of the problem. The bolt spring pushing the bolt up may have been carelessly re-installed. As you can see on the photograph, the trigger-guard-spur, that you find on the Russian models, is missing. Its missing because I removed it so the gun would fit in my holsters - for one thing - and because I don't really use it to rest my middle finger on. To do this, after removing the entire lock-work, I had to remove the trigger guard unit, which has a small curved leaf-spring installed on the top surface. This spring applies a little pressure to push the bolt upwards and is hidden from view when the trigger guard is installed back into the frame. I may have "insulted" this delicate spring a bit when grinding off the spur and/or reinstalling the unit after case-hardening again. When I let the hammer down it pushes the bolt far enough into the slots on the cylinder, locking it. However, just a little wiggle will free the Cylinder and it can be moved.

The problem does not really interfere with the guns operation, I found out at the range yesterday. Anyway, looks like I have to open her up again and see if I can adjust or bend this spring a little. I just dread disassembling again, as the lockwork is a bit complicated.  :-\

Where does one find elk horn big enough to make a set of grips for SAA???    Everything I've found so far is for knife scales and 1911's.......the only one I found specifically for the SAA they wanted more than what I could buy a finished set for from Sack Peterson.

I posted an educated guess (sort of) in the "Clones" thread (Oh how I hate that term).  So take a peak there.
