Title: First Time Shooting in Eight Months!!!!!
Post by: Bryan Austin on June 23, 2021, 04:53:04 PM
I finally got a chance to hit the range today after a long eight months. I tried making a video but failed miserably.

My last shot prior was back in October 2020 when I was shooting at 200 yards. Before a shooter can go to the 250 yard range, they have to shoot three shots inside the black diamond at 50 yards. So rather than reset the scope, I wanted to just make an educated guess on where to aim in order to achieve the three shots. Well, I estimated 2" POA below the target sheet and center. Turned out to be 11" POA below the bullseye. I then just placed the black target where I had been making hits from that POA. Close enough!!!!!  Now I can go back to the 250 yard range and continue where I left off eight months ago without resetting the scope!!!

Uberti Winchester 73' w/ 6x Malcolm Scope
25.8gr Reloder 7
220gr 43-214A
Loaded on an RCBS Inline Green Machine

Small telescope mounted to an iphone and talking through a headset...worked pretty good but wasn't an easy set-up.

Interestingly enough the first two shots after eight months were spot on!!!

Phots are too big and I am too lazy to resize them. Here is a link to the video.

6-27-2021 Range Time
Once I "set the POA to 200 yards center", 200 yard shots did pretty good.

The same when moved to 150 yards. I started out with the POA at the bullseye, then lowered to the 50 yard POA. Shots placed just above bullseye area. Afterwards, shot placement was measured and the 150 POA was added for future shots. If the POA had been correct, all shots would have placed reasonable for the 44-40. Just another excuse to visit the range again in a couple months. I ran out of powder and getting low on primers.

200 Yards = POA center
150 Yards = POA 11.5" Low
50 Yards = POA 9.5" Low

The next time I go shoot, I hope to replicate this target with actual consecutive shots at the one target.
Minus the 6 initial "misses" and one "flyer" (actual shot #8), and superimposing 10 shots from previous target (red dots)...along with bringing down shots 12 thru 15 (blue dots)....this should be an honest example of the capability of this arm at 150 and 200 yards.
I think there is room for improvement with improving the shooter's skills and the bullet caster's skills as well as some handloading skills.
10.5" x 7" @ 150 and 200 yards
25.8gr Reloder 7
220gr 43-214A

Thanks Dusty. This video format actually has been best according to the analytics I have received. Maybe next time I will be at the range alone and all the background noise will be gone.

Have you tried these loads in a pistol? or is that too much?

You mean Reloder 7?
If so, then yes. As expected, not enough powder burns because it is too slow. Velocity suffers...but it does work. I have some Unique and Reloder cases loaded up for revolver comparison but have yet taken the time to document.

Yes, well I guess I was asking if all the loads tested are safe for the pistols. For CAS I use 4.5 of trail boss, very accurate in my 44-40's, 4 pistols and 3 rifles.

I would stick with Trail Boss...both are bulk powders and cost more over time rather than using Unique. Trail Boss is a fast burning pistol powder, burns all of the powder in revolvers...unlike Reloder 7.

Make Sense?

I do. Thank you. I was impressed with all your testing, and was just wondering if you did the same test loads in a colt/uberti/ruger/whatever pistol. I'm primarily a pistol shooter, so that was why I ask. I remember way back when I started CAS I was using Green Dot powder, was all I had at the time, some of the guys in my club more or less complained I was bashing the targets too hard with my heavy loads. I know my TB loads are on the light side, but it is what my guns like best. Right now my bullets are MBC .428's, I tried .430's but they won't chamber in any of my pistols without force feeding, so when I run out of the .428's, I'll try .429.

Ah, okay!!!

I never did try powders like Red Dot, Green Dot or even Bullseye. I would like to try Bullseye one day just to compare.

I used Trail Boss for CAS because it was accurate and I handloaded loaded in volume, and the 6.4gr "bulk" charge I used overflows if double charged. For kicks I tried a full case load of Trail Boss for testing. I was able to get 9.3gr and seat the bullet without compressing the powder. That charge created 15,182 psi and only 1,250fps in a 20" testing barrel. The 6.4gr created 7, 224 psi.

Your 4.5gr charge, if accidently doubled...is gonna roar with chamber pressure if undetected. However, 15,000psi is not going to cause your revolver to "blow up" either, but would "resist" if continued use of that load :-)

I did the same test with Unique but stopped at 12gr. So for those that use 6gr of Unique, a "double charge" produced 21,786 psi and 1,635fps with a 200gr Magma bullet from the 20" testing barrel.

For "plinking", Trail Boss is much better than folks give it credit for.....and can be fun "dinging" targets at 200 yards.

I have a lot of targets documented here: https://sites.google.com/view/44winchester/handloading/targets-load-development?

Over the past few weeks I have been narrowing down my POA's over a variety of ranges with the scope "basically" zeroed in at 200 yards.

Today I tried to get the angle of impact at 265 yards, check the POA at 50 yards and 25 yards.

Added a few videos too.
