I'm sure Drydock will chime in here, but I believe it would be as long as it's in it's pre-1900 configuration.  What rifle do you have?

Ned, I don't have one yet but I found several on Gunbroker. If I can get this link to work here was one that sold pretty cheap

If you're willing to go to a 7mm Mauser, check out 639030967.  There's a 7.62 at 641843519.  Those are completely suitable for GAF.  Mausers were everywhere!  Actually, now that I look again, I think they may both be in 7.62.

As long as it is in proper military configuration, its considered a reasonable caliber substitution.  However, some of these conversions use a soldered in chamber as opposed to a full rebarrel, and should be avoided for shooting purposes.  Be sure of what you are getting.

I would go with the original caliber if at all possible.  I have a Chilean M1895, it is a sweet rifle!

Personally, I'd seriously consider a 7mm.  Brass is everywhere and very reasonable.  (Not as reasonable as 7.62, but not bad.) What persona are you going to use it with?

I just did some Google research, and it seems the Chileans used a chamber insert in the conversion.  I'd stay away from that.

I've got a 1909 Peruvian Mauser that's been re-chambered for 30-06.  Mine looks for all the world like an original 98, roller coaster sight and all.  I would think the 7.62x51 round would be a much better re-clambering choice than mine because the round is shorter.  The standard length 30-06 round is just a bit too long to be loaded into the magazine from a stripper clip.

I used it last year in the EEM at the Grand Muster when I was dressed in the German 1910 Uniform.  Mine shoots well enough that I took 2nd in the EEM long range match.  I got all nine hits, just didn't do it as fast as Ned.

The Ross Rifle is absolutely a GAF legal Expansion era rifle!  However, the only time I ever saw one used in a match, halfway thru the skirmish run the shooter was muttering about stealing a dead Tommie's SMLE . . .   :-X  Who knew Canadians knew so many colorful curses!

Quickfire, I shot an 1895 Chilean converted to .308 at the Nebraska Division match, was it full bbl or chamber only, don't know. Was it safe, I say yes.

Bat, that's nice rifle!  If I didn't already have too many impressions, a "Seebatallion" (sp) would be very tempting with GEW 98.....

Has anyone known of any accidents due to the chamber inserts?

Thanks, Chuck!  I found that site but had no idea how to link it.  That joint at the front of the insert would make me EXTREMELY nervous.

I have a question.  Why would this insert be considered a better choice than simply rechamrering the existing barrel.  When I look up the 7.65x53 I find every measurement imaginable but the outside diameter of the case body, was it larger than the 308 and 30-06?

After a bit more research I think I've answered my own question, the 7.65x53 isn't any wider, just a bit longer at the shoulder than the 7.26x51.  I wonder if a wildcat with a longer shoulder would have left sufficient neck length to hold the bullet properly.  If so 308's could have easily been fire formed to the new chamber.
