Is this soldier holding a 1860 or 61 Colt?
What else can be said about him as far as what type of possible unit etc?

I'm certainly no expert, but I would say the one on the table looks to be a '60 or '61. The one in his hand would look to be more of a '62 Police from the size and the proportions. I'm sure there will be people on here who will know for sure.

Ok....I looked at a few 62s online and I guess it could be. I didnt think that at first because I didnt see the notches or fluting on the cylinder.

The way his hand covers the grip I would guess it is the "Navy" grip as opposed the the larger "Army" grip.
If held the same way, my hand covers the '51 grip but not my '60's grips.

Very much a union man, and don't let the pistols or jacket fool ya, he could be from any branch from several different states. I've seen this photo a lot, and used to know about it. In this instance I think he is actually a cavalryman.
