Semi-annual making the wife fried chicken tonight.

Decided I need to use up some cornmeal that has seemed to aqumulated, stuff seems to breed.   Making cornbread in El Kabong. Don't use it much, prefer the 2 sets of twins for 90% of our cooking.  2 old Wagner 12" chicken fryer and pair of 15" Lodge skillets.

Oh and added a fair amount of brown sugar, use white cornmeal, melted lard and about  3-1 ratio of cornmeal to flour, canned milk for richness as well as 2 brown an 1 blue egg.

Ain't Yankee cornbread or Rebel, it's the way I like it. ;D

Place herea, national Chain place from somewhere up Slim's way called Famous Dave's serves some sort of unfrosted yaller cake they call cornbread, if you add sweet it should have brown sugar, molasses, cane syrup or sorghum syrup.

Cracker Barrel has decent cornbread but it looks like a cupcake.  I want wedges of cornbread.

Didn't miss much, it's ok, but not great.

They really should frost that cornbread, closer to yellow cake, rumor is it's cornmeal and yellow cake mix.

Did I tell you I don't like their cornbread?

If they called it yellow cake and frosted it I would like it, but to call it cornbread is just wrong.  And their decor looks North woods which would be fine if they served Walleye.  First time we went there I told Rita it didn't look like a BBQ joint. ::)

My cornbread is usually 2/1/1cornmeal/wheat flour/brown sugar, an egg and soured milk.

Been posting this around today.

Cold weekend with not much to do, so I put some of my material together and created a doc of 3 lessons that should be able to turn any beginner into a dutch oven cook.

This is based on almost 35 years of dutch oven cooking and over 50 with cast iron.

Some of it don't agree with some of the YouTubers, may not agree with what your mom or grandma told you, but I have done countless experiments to find out what was right and back my statements with science.

The link goes to a free forum board, I set it up as a public access cloud. My IT SIL suggested it as a simple way to allow me to share my materials with links.

There is much good material there on that site, most of it mine, fee free to look it over and see if it's helpful to you.

Ok, we're back, soft tissue injury and got antiinflammatories, will take a couple weeks to heel.. problem seems to be compounded by a dog who over the last month learned how to gain sympathy.

I got up to make coffee, did not want to leave him on the bed in case he tried to get down.   He won't get up, I eased him to the edge and lifted him to the floor, he limped out to the dining room on 3 legs and laid on the blanket I put down for him, figured no reason to force him to go out since we had to go out in a bit.

The niece walked in, up he popped and a 4 legged dog with a bad limp almost ran to greet her.  4 legged dog was lifted into the back of Jeep Compass.  Get to vet, limping 4 legged dog is happy and wants to ride the elevator table.  Judy and the tech Josh get kisses.

Get him home, niece leaves and 3 legged dog limps back to blackets.

So what do I do? I put p nut butter on cracker with pill and deliver it to him.

Got about 5 inches of wet heavy S**W last night, did the S**wblower thing to the driveway, Had all the cars parked off the driveway so it was a quick clearing other than having to stop a couple of times to clear chunks of tree limb that fell from the weight on them. by 10:00 it had all melted off.
I had to replace a kitchen faucet the other day and have been paying for it ever since, clearing the driveway didn't help any.

#2 daughter car batteries keeps losing it's charge. I think it is alternator since the battery does take a charge.

'Tis -4 and sunny. WC -20. "Blustery. Mostly cloudy. Some blowing and drifting snow. Scattered flurries. Highs in the middle teens. West wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Lowest wind chill readings to 25 below zero in the morning."

Slim easy check on alternator. Start vehicle, remove battery cables from battery. If car runs, not alternator.  I just watched a  deal on how important a good battery is to the modern car than just starting. Gas mileage for one.  We have bought  3 batteries and a alternator since Thanksgiving.

Del my dogs all get farm not so fresh (but fresher than store bought) eggs. They get them the way I serve them. Until they tell me they want them over easy, scrambled is what they get. Major when we first got the Shepard’s  one of them was in sad shape. We fed them Chicken and rice along with their kibble. Poor ole Raina was fed that with yogurt.  That and a couple thousand dollars in Vet and meds she is one happy farm dog today. Her sister is fat and lazy.

Cold here again today but sky is clear and calm.

Thanks for the Coffee Slim

All right you made me feel bad.  And I am running out of storage space. I just scrambled a box of eggs for all the dogs. The pig likes them too and the shells go back to the hens for calcium. Scratch

We have been blessed with a good winter egg production and regular buyers. However the farm market is closed for winter so we have a excess. Sometimes we take to a shelter when we are headed to town.

#2 daughter took it to an parts store and they tested it. Alternator is good. Battery still is "good", but I think with the -0 weather the original battery is not performing like it should. So, I'll probably get a new battery for it.

Nice warm day in Billings today. High of 26. Yesterday was much less pleasant.  I was in Butte for MEPS, and when we loaded on the bus to leave the hotel, it was -36 ambient, WC -64.  That was downright uncomfortable. Billings was -30, WC -54.

Speaking of Butte, I passed meps just fine, and will theoretically swear in next week, then ship to basic training in early May.

Went with Rita to the church tonight to help them with what ever it is they call the day before.

We were the first there and they got unlocked and got to it.  Told them I could mix pancakes if they'd show me where the sourdough starter was.

Blank stare.  Had some bags of stuff, said you just had to add water to make pancake batter, ok, then the two ladies drug out a couple big measuring cups and I got spooked and decided to help Rita with the sausage. Should have taken my 15 Lodges, got assigned a couple lectric skillets, had some sort of strange seasoning on them so I had to use a plastic Turner so as to not damage it.  Figure Martha Stewart must a seasoned it.

Found out I really wasn't gonna cook sausage but was just heating up up leftovers. Some Jimmy Dean had leftover cause the packages said they were already cooked so that means they were leftovers.

Got in trouble with Rita and she whacked me with her turner cause I kept singing Big Bad John.

Pancakes they made dropped the batter on the griddle with something that looked like a miniature top of a cream separator and it was damn stingy with the batter. Didn't make a proper pancake, was no more than 6 inches across.  Kinda like them wimpy things you get in resteraunts

Met the new Sky Pilot, but he never heard the term Sky Pilot before. Must be fresh out of seminary and was sick the day they taught other terms for circuit riders.

Ate. They had plenty of help cleaning up. Some of the youth group must have been bad and got put on KP.

Asked Dale, the ramrod of the kitchen if I could take a couple extra pancakes for my buddy and he said sure. He's been to the house and Rowdy likes him.

Came home. Put some peanut butter on them cause we like peanut butter on them on Nebraska.

I'm hiding in the bedroom cause the V show is on.

Both which are good cooked with cured pork and served with a splash of vinegar.

The only thing wrong with either is Yuppies don't know how to fix them right.

Coffee is up

Looks like more rain and severe weather here in Dixie today

Our farm Vet is about 25 miles away, I drove there yesterday and picked up injectable wormer, for the Boss last.
Then arranged the sale of one of the little Bucks, via Craigslist classified. Met buyer at dark to pick it up. 9 more to go

We've been having soup pretty regular, too. Bought some (somewhat) cheap turkeys after Thanksgiving, every now and have another thanksgiving dinner, then boil down the remains for stock. Make some soup and freeze the extra broth for later.

Rita eats some of that canned soup, not me, do noodles and critter, did bacon and beans the other night but can hardly be called soup, don't have enough water.

Last time I got an urge for soup I gave up, ain't paying $11 a pound for ox tail, I'm sure the Yuppies have something to do with that also.

Well, we're back on the air here. Decided after church to get some more firewood, cut a dead tree and dragged it back to the yard, with the big tractor. Front loader with bale spike. The hydraulics tend to leak down on this tractor. So the bale spike nosed down into the ground while I was cutting up the wood. Who would have guessed it happened to bury itself RIGHT INTO THE SATELLITE CABLE!!!! Tried re routing through a no longer used satellite TV cable, no good. Guess that was why DirecTV quit working.... Sooooo I resorted to "Redneck engineering" Stripped the ends of the co-ax cable, twisted to inner wire together, taped it, and twisted the outer braid and taped it and VIOLA!! We're back. At least for now. Guess I need some proper cable repair stuff, or else run a whole new cable.

Update on Rowdy, he is a shithead.

Got him steps rigged up, showed him. Made him use them, cool.

Rita comes home and lays down, uses stairs and shows her cause he's so proud he can get on the bed by himself again.

Get done with supper, he comes in here, looks at the stairs and whines so I can pick him up and put him on the bed.

I thought that was the idea, to keep me from having to lift a 95 pound dog which is pretty much double my limit.

Made him use them.

45 and sunny today, oddly enough. I was thinking spring might be here, but we're forecast for 5 more inches of snow tomorrow afternoon, so apparently not.

Got to fly today for the first time in a month (to the hour, actually. But who's counting?) Felt good.

That is pertaining to firearms they'd like to own.

Mine has shrunken some as I have found certain ones, this weekend I ran across a major one...

LUGER  ... I wanted one since I was a kid....

It's not mine...yet !  may not be either, but it's there and maybe...???

1942 Mauser made , it is a War trophy , and the Widow of a Greatest Generation member has brought it in to my friendly FFL.
A price has yet to be negotiated, may well be beyond my reach but I remain hopeful.

It really didn't hit me until I was turning base the first time. Training at a class C airport, dealing with tower and other traffic was taking a lot of my attention. For example, they had me hold short of the runway while they landed a 757 in the opposition side of the runway.

"...So you walked away from it, AND you can still use the airplane tomorrow....?

I believe it was Chuck Yager that said something like that " or maybe Alan Shepard ?

"Any landing you can walk away from is a good one, but if you can use the plane again, it's a great one. "

another version is
" Any landing you can walk away from is a good one, but if you're walking, you probably broke the aero-plane."

.................................
As for the " IDIOT " with the Green New Deal  house bill ....perhaps she would serve us well if she put a plastic bag over her head and breath deep !

Went the customary , visit to the Toy Store and then lunch with my friend....

the news on the Luger was lackluster, the Widow and male companion had come in and picked it up, "she has decided not to do anything as of now", she said.
She has my fair offer  :-\ .... We will see ...but,  I think , they are just testing the aprasial waters.

On the other hand, lunch was good ,  "Sushi" or as I refur to it "Bait"   :)

weather is nice ( and has been ) more of same is in store....

"SHE" is offing to the Ski Pilot's ....

Afternoon all.

60 and sunny today. The only real news is that I have locked myself out of my room. So now I'm waiting for my girlfriend to get back with some paperclips so I can get back in, since all of the RAs decided to leave campus at the same time.

And the airplane only needed a little duct tape.

The 1942 Mauser made Luger the Widow had, I have deemed the offer passed, as she has not responded ...

But when a door closed a window seems to open ...planets align

I did acquire a Luger today, 1917 Erfurt Imperial Arsenal 9mm Parabellum.... all matching numbers w/ 1 matching numbered magazine ( however it has crack in the wood base plug probably in the same bombing) w/ original holster.
It is not a Treaty recognized second re-dated to 1920, so it had not been turned at the Armistice or turned in under the The Treaty of Versailles.
It does have some rock (stone building) rash on the side plate when the Bomb collapsed in on the Owner...

A letter Accompanying it states is was taken in the village Falasie (Normandy) of Aug. 1944 ( Battle of the Falaise Pocket ) Six weeks after D-Day.

I will begin the research on John Wilson Collette ( US 1st. Army ) he is the fellow that captured this piece .

I'm proud to be the current caretaker  ;D  course I'll eat Lettice sandwiches this week  :-\

Thanks for the coffee Slim

Seems everyone has a good story to tell from the weekend.

Slim are horses going on a trip? Coggins? I use to hold the horses for Vet at sale barn, while he drew blood, then pen them..

Major looks like you have a history lesson to complete
