Bull,

Black Jack Flagg in his Span Am uniform and I (Bat Masterson) in my Punitive Expedition uniform were recruited at Hell on Wheels 2010 and participated in the Color Guard.  We are both listed as new recruits and pictured in this post:  http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,33468.msg433918.html#msg433918

Until the Wild Bunch events began I was not motivated to put together a uniform.  I began working on this 1916 officers uniform some years ago and won the 2009 End of Trail, Wild Bunch costume contest in a variation of this same uniform.  I wore the uniform to the first Wild Bunch side match at HOW and was asked to particpate in the color guard as a result.  As they say the rest is history.  I soon learned that while I had created a very good shooting costume it was missing a key item for particapation in the color guard.  My recruters will be happy to learn that I have now aquired an original 1902 U. S. Army officers saber.

While reviewing the SASS Convention wire I happened on the Color Guard string and recalled being directed to the barracks at the time of my recruitment but this is my first visit.  I will be at the convention, but while I have been working on it, I do not as yet have a class A (were they called that in 1916?) uniform that I believe should be the minimum uniform of the day for that color guard.

Bat,

While we prefer a dress uniform for those participating on a color guard there is no set requirement to have one.  We've had a few people participate in a field uniform.

For GAF purposes, we only have dress and field uniforms.  The various militaries of the 19th century used different terminologies (and Class A was not one of them), so we have "consolidated" them into two groups.  Dress uniforms are those that would have been worn for balls, dinners, and social occasions, thus may be what were known as full dress or undress.  Field uniforms are those that would have been seen in the field and may be the undress, fatigue, or mix and match with civilian items.  Wear what you have and wear it with pride and that will do quite well.

If anyone knows how to contact Black Jack Flagg please ask him to contact me or just enlist through the GAF website so I can collect all the info we need.

Thanks,
