While reviewing the SASS Convention wire I happened on the Color Guard string and recalled being directed to the barracks at the time of my recruitment but this is my first visit. I will be at the convention, but while I have been working on it, I do not as yet have a class A (were they called that in 1916?) uniform that I believe should be the minimum uniform of the day for that color guard.
Bat,
While we
prefer a dress uniform for those participating on a color guard there is no set requirement to have one. We've had a few people participate in a field uniform.
For GAF purposes, we only have dress and field uniforms. The various militaries of the 19th century used different terminologies (and Class A was not one of them), so we have "consolidated" them into two groups. Dress uniforms are those that would have been worn for balls, dinners, and social occasions, thus may be what were known as full dress or undress. Field uniforms are those that would have been seen in the field and may be the undress, fatigue, or mix and match with civilian items. Wear what you have and wear it with pride and that will do quite well.
