Woo Hoo New Pistol!
« on: August 28, 2012, 09:02:50 PM »
Hi,

I was just given a Lyman Plains Pistol in .50 Cal ... which just happens to be the size of my Pedersoli Scout rifle ...

Thank you Big Guy!

And thank you to who so kindly gave it to me ...

TTFN,

My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

Hi Joe,

I will certainly put it to the public use ... the ramrod will not go all the way down to the touch hole, so I am going to send it off to the gunsmith to make sure that there is not a round in the barrel .... it is probably overkill to have a gunsmith inspect it, but I have reached the advanced age of 60 without getting the nickname of 'Lefty' by such overly cautious habits ... *S*

oughta be able to check it yerself - pull the nipple out & pour some oil in the hole, after it soaks a minute it'll be safe to shine a light down the muzzle.

Some muzzleloaders have a "patent breech"; that is the breechplug has a powder chamber of slightly smaller diameter than the barrel.
That way the ramrod will stop on this "ledge", but a cleaning rod of smaller diameter should go all the way down to the bottom of the breechplug.

Track of the Wolf has plenty of options.

Sir Charles,

The gun has a rear site not unlike the '73 Winchester ... ramped up to the second or third ramp ...

So I wither have to get:

1.) A 1/4" elongated site(total length of site about 3/5" to the bottom of the notch in the Buckhorns); Track of the Wolf has none of these ...

2.) Turn it into a competent gunsmith and let him either lower the front site/ make up a really tall site.

3.) Put in a lower front site/file the present front site down and then install a rear site that works with it.

I think a man should know his weaknesses .... mine is that I am a great medic but a lowsy metalworker. I think the best solution would be #2 considering my strengths and weaknesses ...

Jamestown John,

Not Much really ... Kent Shootwell offered me the 'escutcheon' that replaces the 'belthook' on the left hand side of the pistol. But it is plain iron and must be browned to match the rest of the pistol ... and there is a high spot in the bedding for the barrel ... I tried to 'ease' it into place and only suceeded in pushing out the 'holder' for the wedge ...

But I have a retired gunsmith in my reenactment group and am going to see what he thinks ... and give him possession if he offers a good price ....

Other than that, not much ... *S*

I would be glad to help. We have the Lyman pistol and Great Plains rifle so are familiar with them.
My wife and I were members of the sailing club and had our boat there too. What years were you there?

Jamestown John,

Gee, ny Senior memory loss is showing ... I came back from Desert Storm .... spent a year at Hidden Harborthen moved to Stockton Sailing Club ... must have been somewhere around 94-96 .... I had a yellow hulled Pearson Triton (hull#3) and was nearly at the end of 'C' Dock, if memory is working now ...
