Braces
« on: June 23, 2022, 11:25:06 PM »
No, not galluses or suspenders, but braces of pistols!  The well-equipped man of yore would arm himself as heavily as possible if he expected a lot of trouble.  Regardless, for SASS you need a pair of revolvers, or a brace if you will.  I am one of those variety is the spice of life people, and while I do stick with one or two pair as "main match" guns, all my guns have to come out for at least one match a year, some more than others.  I have a few braces of SAA type guns, but those are for another forum.   I've shown these in other topics in STORM, but here they are together.

On top, this was my first pair of conversions, from about 20 years ago when Cimarron first brought out the '51 Richards-Masons.  Showing this brace is cheating just a bit, because I rarely shoot them together any more.  One now has a short barrel and the other gets paired with the Kirst Strite '61, which was the very first Kirst-Strite conversion.  The '51 with the 4 3/4" barrel has been paired up with the '61 Type II for the last couple years, but now has a new playmate, the nickled '51.  The two Type II's are a '60 in 44 Spcl and a '61 in .38.  And then finally the engraved guns, which have been out of circulation for a few years due to light triggers but will be coming back from a gunsmith soon (I know my limitations) and joining back into heavy rotation.

I can think of several "braces" that I always wanted to put together but I always seem to end up with different guns. This is as close as I've gotten to a matched pair. A Cimarron 7th cavalry and a Uberti "Old West".

CraigC, I have a similar brace to yours.  I will shortly be posting a "Braces" topic in the Colt Clones forum; you should add yours to that one, too.

Do braces have to be an exact match? I have a pair of nice Colt New Services, one with a 7.5 inch barrel and the other with a 4.5 inch barrel, both are in .38-40. My only .38-40s. Good shooters. The long barrel Colt works great out of a crossdraw. I shoot them often at ECSASS shoots. [WASA rules allow DA’s]

Well, to me the definition of a brace of pistols would be...Two Pistols!  Probably in olden times those who actually did carry two pistols often had mismatched.  Except Wild Bill, of course.  :)

Let's see those New Services, Ed. They're a fine model. Yours sound like a good pair.
